Don't forget the Victorian Hunter Education Course.
This year’s course is only a month away and the organisers are busy putting the final touches on what promises to be our best course yet. We have re-organised the program to allow significantly more time learning in the field, we still have a few things to finalise but here is what the weekend at Forest Edge might look like for participants:
Friday evening you roll down the Latrobe River valley through the Messmate and Peppermint forest to our spectacular base for the weekend – Forest Edge on the Latrobe River flats.
After meeting your room-mates and settling into your ensuite accommodation it’s up to the cinema style lecture theatre for deer DVD’s or perhaps some skills sessions on ADA’s state of the art hunting simulator.
When we’ve all arrived hunting legend NOEL O’CONNOR will lead participants through an interactive presentation on the six species of deer present in the wild in Australia, their habits and, of course Noel’s unique insights on how to successfully hunt them.
Following on from Noel well known hunter, deer photographer and Victoria Police Sergeant EAMON LEAHY leads an all-important discussion on practical firearms safety. This session is a “must attend” for anyone with serious aspirations of being a deer hunter.
Senior Game Victoria officer STEWART McGLASHAN will then outline the regulations which govern deer hunting in Victoria, why they are there and how they are applied when hunting.
A bit of supper and some more opportunities to use the simulator before we turn in for a (relatively) early night – It’s a big day tomorrow!
Saturday sees us rise with the birds for breakfast then Moroka30 founder and the man behind the renowned Beyond the Divide television series ROB FICKLING leads us through a thorough grounding in the basics of bush stalking sambar deer. Then it’s over the footbridge and in to the forest for an interactive session on deer tracking led by bushcraft expert, regular magazine feature writer and former Australian Army survival instructor BOB GOUGH.
From there we venture further in to the State Forest for practical learning following game trails, gully systems, the deer’s “signposts”, pads and wallows and browse – make sure you have a snack and some water in your daypack because the entire morning is spent in the bush with our expert presenters learning and following deer sign and beginning to apply hunting tactics.
Discuss what we’ve learnt so far over lunch then we’re back up into the lecture theatre where renowned hunter and activist BRENDAN BOLDING from PARA PARK (SUNDAY ISLAND) will lead the discussion on hunting hog deer. Brendan’s knowledge is second to one and his enthusiasm for all deer is contagious.
Next it’s time to get your hands dirty as legendary local hunting guide, photographer and houndsman PETER CHRISTIAN from BAW BAW ADVENTURES sharpens the knife and leads you through the practical methods of breaking down and carrying out your deer after the kill.
Magazine writer and well known hunter STEVE GARLICK and his GWP “SCOUT” are next leading an informative interactive discussion covering selection and training of gundogs and effective hunting strategies using the prevailing conditions to your advantage.
DR MATT DRAISMA will need no introduction to anybody who has read the various hunting magazines over the years. Matt has worked passionately on hunter education for the past three decades and has some insights to share on the topic of animal welfare that every hunter should be aware of.
Late afternoon is one of the best times to be in the forest with the sambar so it’s back over the footbridge we go study the behaviour of deer as they emerge from their beds and to look at the best use and effectiveness of various optics in the fading winter light.
Enjoy a sumptuous roast dinner in the dining room and some more opportunities to use the simulator then it’s upstairs for interactive sessions of hunting over scent-trailing hounds with accomplished bushman CHRIS EATON
We wind up Saturday evening with a group discussion on our shared learning’s, a chance to ask more questions of our panel of presenters and some supper and raffles and SCOTT McDONALD will Douglas Score some trophy deer heads before we turn in to get ready for what will be a busy and exciting morning.
A quick breakfast at dawn on Sunday then its back in the bush to put in to practice all of the new skills you have acquired over the last twenty four hours.
Then it’s up to the pavilion and hands on knives (watch those fingers!) as local taxidermists and keen international hunters SCOTT McDONALD and CAMERON JOHNSON pass on the skills you’ll need to get your trophy to the taxidermist in peak condition.
Next local hunter, fisherman and beef farmer GRAHAM BASTIN lets you in on his no-nonsense, plain English method of preparing a venison carcass for the kitchen.
In to the dining room for our last meal at Forest Edge then we close the course with Australian Deer Association Life Member, Editor of Australian Deer Magazine and former DPI Scientist KEN SLEE leading an all-important discussion on deer management and the future of deer in Australia.
Through our unique structure of field based learning complimented by interactive discussions and hands on practical learning sessions the VICTORIAN HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE arms students with all of the knowledge they need to be successful deer hunters in a wide range of scenarios and conditions drawing on the experience of our expert panel comprising some of Australia’s most renowned and accomplished deer men. |
