For most taxpayers, the net medical expenses tax offset (NMETO) will be abolished from 1 July 2013 and taxpayers will no longer be eligible to claim a 20% tax offset for net medical expenses.
There will be a transitional period for taxpayers who claimed the NMETO for the 2012/2013 income year. They will continue to be eligible for the NMETO in the 2013/2014 income year provided they satisfy the existing rules. Similarly, those who claim the NMETO in 2013/2014 will continue to be eligible for the offset in 2014/2015. Taxpayers can still claim NMETO for medical expenses relating to disability aids, attendant care or aged care expenses until 30 June 2019. |
