Last vintage: James Halliday 92 points!
Good purple hue; excellent varietal character; cassis/blackcurrant, ripe tannins, and subtle
oak
doing no more than is needed. Best in this line since it was started, an ideal
full-bodied match for a rich, rare rump steak.
Tasting notes from
Angus The Bull website:
Intense colour with bright purple hues. Ripe black fruits with rich dark
chocolate and vanillin smoky oak aromas. Medium to full bodied palate weight, characterised by firm tannins and a savoury masculine finish. An ideal accompaniment to red meat and premium cuts of prime beef. Will continue to improve over the next 4-6
years.

Mr Riggs “The Gaffer” McLaren Vale Shiraz 2010
FREE DELIVERY
OUR PRICE: $14.99 p/bottle, $179.88 p/case
RRP: RRP $24.00 p/bottle, $288.00 p/case
(Dan’s selling for $18.99 bottle)
Without exaggeration, this is one of the best Shiraz’ that we’ve had under $30 EVER. It’s a red that’s ticking boxes.
McLaren Vale: one of Australia’s top regions for Shiraz, with a maritime climate and long autumns to guarantee balanced fruit, thanks to slower ripening. This is what Aussie reds are all about. Power and balance.
2010: Stellar vintage across all of South Australia, and now at 3 years old, this vintage will be in its prime for the foreseeable future.
Ben Riggs: Superstar. He’s been making wine for in Mclaren Vale for 25 years, plus 8 years overseas, with stints in Italy, California as well as working with Cazal Viel in the South of France. If we know one thing about the French, it’s that they don’t take advice on their wine from just anyone.
The Wine: It’s full bodied, but manages to retain an elegance that’s difficult to achieve with powerful shiraz fruit. Helped in this case by the use of French oak, for a more subtle, integrated finish. Usually we use American oak for big Shiraz, but this is Aussie winemaking at it’s finest: shirking tradition and reaping the benefits. End result? A wine that’s intense and dark, but subtle and complex enough to earn a slot or two in the bottom row or two of the ol’ cellar.
Persistent dark berry and plum, with just the right balance between chocolate and spice, acid and tannin.
But let’s not get overly technical. It’s a bloody well-made red from one Australia’s finest, and it’s half price with free shipping.
Merci Beaucoup, Monsieur Riggs.

The Winery:
-
5 stars from Halliday.
Parker Coonawarra Estates have an unmatched reputation here & overseas because of their integrity and consistently superb quality.
-
For years they’ve been making Cabernet Sauvignon that score massively with Halliday
ranging from 90 points to 96.
-
In the past decade, they have started to put out some top of the line
Shiraz, boasting previous vintage scores of 92 and 94 points.
The Region:
The Parker Estate Vineyard is situated at the southern
end of Coonawarra and was established in 1985 on the rich terra-rossa soil over limestone of the Coonawarra. This soil will give the wines a rich, complex, earthy flavour and will witness a beautiful complexity on the palate.
The Vintage: 2008 was a SUPERB vintage for red wine in the Coonawarra and scored a 9/10 rating from
James Halliday.
The Wine:
A beautiful, full bodied red wine. On the nose we have aromas of blackberry, liquorice,
a touch of vanillin oak and spice. The palate boasts good body weight and richness with flavours of liquorice and ripe blackberry followed by some vanillin oak, a touch of mint and spice. Very fine grained almost velvet like tannins. Long finish with liquorice,
vanillin oak and spicy white pepper aftertaste. It’s
a beautifully balanced wine with strength, fruit depth and elegance. But
let’s not get all tangled up with technical terms here! It’s a beautiful wine, produced in a 5 star winery, which has been making top quality wines for 30 years now. Need I say more?

Pinot Noir
It’s a grape that’s difficult to grow, it’s a bit fussy. It needs the perfect balance between warm days and cool nights, the right soil, the right sunlight. It’s so fussy that winemakers don’t generally grow it unless the vineyard conditions are perfect, it’s just not worth the effort. (Generally, good Aussie Pinots have to be from Tassie, but the serious stuff is mostly from Kiwiland.)
This does mean that it’s a much rarer, and therefore more expensive, wine variety; that’s why you’ll see a pinot for $30 in a bottle shop next to $20 shiraz. As soon as you buy a pinot, you’re already moving towards the more premium end of things.
This Wine
Fruit is from the Aurora Vineyard, in the township of Bendigo, Central Otago.
Lovers of Pinot will know that Central Otago is one of the best places on earth to get your pinot from. Big daily differences between min and max temp, free draining soils (very similar to those of Burgundy, France) and a long, cool, dry autumn. This is Pinot Heartland, and about the only thing we’ll openly admit that the kiwis do better than us.
The vineyard is planted with six different clones of Pinot Noir, the subtle differences of which give complexity to the wine while still retaining a cohesive terroir. 2011 was a bit of an average year in South Australia, but NZ did very well. Not as much rain before harvest, which watered down much of the OZ crop.
Dark plum in colour, on the nose you’ve got sweet red and dark berry fruit, with subtle oak and hints of dried herbs and spices. The palate is classic Central Otago Pinot Noir: light to mid-bodied, with savoury mushroom notes and fine, balanced tannins. Classy drinking for summer or winter.
The grower
James Dicey. He’s a Central Otago legend: part of the family that basically runs the region. He’s a fourth generation vigneron, his father founded Mt Difficulty Wines, and his brother Matt is now the GM and Winemaker there. The whole family is extremely in demand for vineyard management, and consistent results like the fruit in this Pinot show why.

We’ve just got a new wine and it’s very special.
We’ve found a Chardonnay that’s not only a great wine, it’s also made using
organic grapes.
Chardonnay is making a massive comeback. People are getting sick of Sauvignon
Blanc and re-discovering Chardonnay. This is nothing like those 1980s blown out overdone Chardy’s.
It’s difficult to find a great wine that is also organic and affordable.
Gemtree call it ‘winemaking from the heart’.
Not too fussed about organic? – well it’s simply a fantastic little drop regardless
of how it’s made.
There’s not much of this wine around so grab it while you can!!!
About the wine:
- Lovely McLaren Vale Chardonnay, McLaren Vale is famous for producing top
quality grapes.
- It’s not coming from a mass-producer and you won’t see this in general
stores.
- Not a big fat heavy Chardonnay but not a really light tight style either.
This one gets the perfect in between balance. Exactly what people are looking for.
- Lovely peach and nectarine beautifully balanced with fresh acidity. Oak
very much in the background. Seamless and finishes very clean.
It’s a great wine and perfect for the move into winter.
Food matching?
Great with pork, chicken or seafood and with autumn style salads. It’s great on its own or with a nice cheese selection.
About the Winery:
- 5 stars from James Halliday, that’s the top rating that a winery can get
- Certified Organic. Means they’re passed all the ‘organic’ tests.
- Organic wine? It means they don’t use any pesticides when they grow their
grapes. - They have sound environmental practices and the vineyards and winery are completely sustainable.
- This is the way wine was made before people started making pesticides and
all that stuff. It’s much more traditional and you get top quality grapes.
-Boutique winery, family owned and run (the Buttery family). The Buttery’s
were growing grapes for other winemakers and decided it was time to keep their best grapes for themselves!
