biting
it is common for toddlers to bite other children. biting is age appropriate because the toddler is:
. breaking new teeth
. learning to talk, but not yet able to communicate effectively
. egocentric, so wants things to go as they want them to
. sometimes able to gain attention from others through hurting someone else
. in a sensory stage where biting is another way to explore the world.
for a biting toddler this may mean that you need to :
. provide teething materials and/or equipment made for chewing; for example, teething rings, cold drinks, medications to soothe gums
. assist the toddler to communicate with others
. help the toddler learn some basic communication skills; for example, 'N0', 'Stop' and Mine
. expect them to want to keep toys and to have toys that others have, so provide multiple copies of each toy so that there are fewer disagreements
. provide comfort, attention, support and physical contact. |
