Quad bike death
safety alarm
THE death of a Melbourne
woman following a quad
bike accident has ramped
up the push for stricter
safety standards for allterrain vehicles.
Calls for quad bikes also
known as all-terrain vehicles
or ATVs to be fitted with
mandatory crush protection
devices are being echoed by
industry leaders following
the death of 38-year-old
Chelsey Callaghan on the
weekend.
Ms Callaghan suffered
serious head injuries when
she became dislodged from
the quad bike she was driving during an adventure
tour in New Zealand on
October 11.
The death raises the number of Australian fatalities
relating to ATVs to 14 people this year. There are an
estimated 220,000 quad
bikes in use nationwide.
The escalating figure has
prompted authorities to
demand an examination
into ways to improve quad
bike safety.
Charles Armstrong, chairman of the National Farmers'
Federation workplace relations committee, called for
manufacturers to fit all new
quad bikes with an approved
crush protection device or at
point of sale to combat asphyxiation incidents, which
accounted for 40 per cent of
ATV-related fatalities.
"The time has certainly
arrived for manufactures to
have crush protection devices." he said. |
