Reason pls
First, also consider Olympus OMD, if size, look and $ not a problem.
If you just compare picture quality (J1 and J2 basically the same)

* dynamic range (Sony 12.7 EV vs J1 11 EV)
* color depth (23.6b vs 21.5b)
* low noise at high ISO (Sony 1079 ISO vs 372 ISO)
Nex-5n beats Nikon J1 in all three areas.
For portrait,
Sony has much larger sensor (Sony 23.4x15.6mm vs Nikon 13.2x8.8mm), it can generate much shallow DoF.
Sony crops is 1.6x and Nikon is 2.7x, Most DSLR lens are useless in Nikon J1. A Nikon 35mm f1.8 DX became 94.5mm.
Sony got much better manual mode for manual lens, much easier if you want to use a manual Lecia lens (and other m43 lens)
Nikon 1 need to use 30-110mm to get shallow DoF, or manual lens.
For Landscape,
It isn't that bad, as you want everything sharp anyway, and Nikon is good at that.
Sony has panorama, which is great if you want it.
For holiday photo and family photo, you want something light and fast, which is where Nikon J1 is good at.
1) fast startup, less shutter lag
2) fast and accurate focus (phase detection), (many focus points), face detect, object detect ...

4) smaller and cheaper than Nex-5,
5) build in flash
6) build for beginner, it has a fully automatic feature, the camera will do everything for you.
If is a better holiday photo camera from my point of view, it is better quality than DC, but not too much bigger.
It sits well in the $500 price with twin lens.
Overall, I will still buy a Sony Nex-5n. Trust me, my J1 has done 10,000+ photos now, I know what I am talking about
