BRISBANE police are warning residents to be more careful about home security after a woman was sexually assaulted at knifepoint in her home early today.
The 23-year-old woman was lying on a couch in her Kelvin Grove home when a man wearing only socks attacked her at about 3am (AEST), police said.
Brisbane Central District Inspector Brent Carter said the victim had not long returned home in a taxi after nightclubbing and was alone.
“She was surprised by a male offender who put his arm around her neck and assaulted her in her own home,” Insp Carter told reporters in Brisbane.
Another 23-year-old woman was slashed with a knife and punched by a balaclava-clad man who broke into her home at Runcorn in Brisbane's southside early yesterday morning.
The man put his hand over her mouth and held a knife to her throat.
She struggled with the man, who punched her several times in the face and slashed her chin but fled when she broke free.
Insp Carter said it was too early to tell if the two incidents were linked, but detectives were comparing the cases.
The offender in the latest attack – described as Caucasian, in his 30s, about 175cm tall, of proportionate build with short cropped brown hair – gained entry through a window.
“(The window) was slightly open and may I say that I know it's summer and it's quite warm, but people just need to be a bit vigilant in terms of their home security,” he said.
“If people are looking at leaving windows open etcetera at night time, perhaps they can take some security measures.”
Insp Carter said police were trying to determine whether the victim had been followed by investigating the nightclubs she had visited and the taxi she had used, and viewing security footage.
He said while the victim had been threatened and was now traumatised, she was not physically injured.
The knife the offender used could have been taken from the woman's kitchen, he said.
Insp Carter said the attacks were not linked to a recent spate of sexual attacks on women in Brisbane's parks and on bikeways.
