St George offers job protection

St George Bank told its annual meeting yesterday that the bank would guarantee employment on equivalent terms and conditions to any staff member displaced by the contracting of their work to a supplier outside Australia. The bank has shifted a few dozen jobs to service providers in India, though employment at the bank in Australia increased by 1000 to 8500 over the last five years, the bank said. Nevertheless, St George, like other banks is sensitive to union and media activism over the issue.
