ZT Silverlight’s coming 5th version could be its last

Several of my customer and partner contacts have told me they have heard from their own Microsoft sources over the past couple of weeks that Silverlight 5 is the last version of Silverlight that Microsoft will release.

They said they are unsure whether there will be any service packs for it, and they are also not clear on how long Silverlight 5 will be supported by Microsoft.

(There’s no end date yet on Microsoft’s lifecycle page for free support for Silverlight for Silverlight 4. According to the page, Microsoft must give developers and customers a year heads-up before ending support for any given Silverlight version. Free support for Silverlight 3 ended in April 2011.)
One of my contacts said he believed that the final version of Silverlight 5 may only work with Internet Explorer on Windows and won’t work on Mac OS platforms or with other browsers at all. (Silverlight 4 supports Windows and Mac OS X and the IE, Chrome and Safari browsers.)

From what Foley has dug up, Silverlight 5 could very well be the final numbered edition of Silverlight. Whether it will receive Service Packs or not is unknown. The length of official Microsoft support for the product is also not known at this moment. But that the train is stopping at the fifth station appears to be more than likely. We aren’t surprised, as we have chronicled the lengthy, and slow, decline of Silverlight for some time.

This is not to say that Silverlight is dead at the moment, in fact, it’s quite alive. Sure, Silverlight lost its boss to Azure in May, but Microsoft has continue to support it on the Windows Phone platform, is bringing it to the Xbox, and so forth. But these have long felt like bumps on a downward slide. And for each up there has been a down, such as Bing refocusing away from Silverlight and so forth. With Windows 8′s new application development framework in place, Silverlight loses a large chunk of its usefulness, and so forth.

Think of it like this, with HTML5 and other technologies, Microsoft has no need for Silverlight, and appears ready to pull the plug. Of course, those who wish to can use Silverlight with XAML to develop for Windows 8, but you have to wonder how many will. Silverlight, we said sometime ago, appeared to be on its way out. We seem to have been right.

This is the right strategy. It's as much as a admission that this is an app-store driven world more than HTML5's capabilities. In an app-store world plugins are not allowed and downloaded apps are used over and above Rich Internet Applications. A strategy based around WinRT makes more sense for the Windows eco-system, especially if that strategy lines up with the Phone SDK.

Saying that, it will take years to migrate to Windows 8. So it does make sense to provide a level of cross-compatibility between the WinRT/Metro world and older versions of Windows. For this reason I would there will be a Silverlight 5.5 or a Silverlight Toolkit for WinRT that provides a level of compatibility to make dual support more realistic.

这样的话sl5也没必要出了，未来无非改个名字而已，sl/wpf其实基本上是一会事情。

换句话讲，不是sl5还是sl6有没有的问题，这是个文字游戏，关键是xaml based的UI解决方案，微软还要不要？

不能这样说，xaml based的UI解决方案微软依然可以host到桌面程序上，关键是web上，微软把宝压在了html5上，所以SL死了

我的意思是sl 是wpf的一个子集，技不压身，多学点没坏处，这时从个人角度看。

从公司角度看，sl5 on the way，然后说sl死了，太早了吧；微软的另一个重头戏windows azure的界面以前是html的，现在全改成了sl4的，如果微软已经确定不在支持sl了，为什么不通知azure team一声。我在这家公司每年给微软的consulting fee，特意问过微软这个事情，微软说不知道这些消息哪来的。

说实在的，这个可能是html team搞得politics。

目前英文网上最有兴趣的是关心silverlight 的死活，实际上就是个tool而已，比如说一把螺丝刀，你不用，关心它干啥。何况任何技术都有终极的时候，害怕还是不知所措？胡乱猜想一下，从软件发展来看， 比如从结构化到oo，的确有了不少进步，无论是项目管理还类库扩展和复用有了很大进步，比如桌面程序从win32 api 到mfc到.net还有Java等，越来越成熟也越来越可靠，但web form的流行，尤其用html+js是对这一系列进步的颠覆，设计理念又回到了ugly的年代，但sl是个纯oo的理念，的确在软件设计工程上有着自己独到的优势，可能这就是争论的焦点。

最近看了些html5的东西，试验了一些控件，说实在的，没有太出色的东西，对比sl的东西还差得太远。不过我们可能要支持mobile， solution很简单，mobile，给它另一个simplified 的portal。

如果你是architect, 一个5million的企业项目，你敢用silverlight吗？你说你敢，下面的人看到silverlight每前途了全部走光怎么办？

我们现在的项目是8m的，用的就是silverlight，其实很多silverlight的developer都是从asp.net过来的，asp.net/html/js/css对他们一点都不陌生。其实很多sl developer不愿意回到html/js，这是事实。

再退一步讲，如果微软不再支持sl了，用回asp.net，目前sl用的是MVVM，整个架构是soa，主要的business logic全在server 端，用xml schema规范的数据结构， 换回asp.net/mvc无非是界面的事情，换个view而已，一个team3个月也差不多了。

ms 每个开发team之间竞争也挺大的，不过要说sl死了，个人认为短时间内肯定不会。

html5的普及+浏览器的支持这是一个长时间的过程，在那之前SL都还是很有市场的。
