Foreign students to get visa incentive
The Federal Government says it will loosen some visa requirements for international students in an effort to draw more people to Australian universities.
The Government has released a report by former NSW Labor government minister Michael Knight that calls for a shake-up of immigration requirements.
It says it will introduce a more streamlined visa process for overseas students who want to complete a tertiary degree in Australia.
International students planning to attend Australian universities will now be treated as though they are unlikely to stay illegally, regardless of which country they come from.
The Government will also ease financial requirements for some student visas and introduce a new work visa for foreign students who graduate in Australia.
Tertiary Education Minister Chris Evans says education providers are struggling with the high Australian dollar and the new rules will help attract students.
"The university and vocational education sectors have been concerned for some time that the visa system was making them uncompetitive in what is stiff competition among provider nations," he said.
"They were wanting to make sure our visa system was allowing them to compete on an equal basis." |
