September Subsidised Desexing Programme
While most Sydneysiders are enjoying this beautiful sunny weather those involved in animal rescue know there is a darker side. As we approach spring animals will begin to breed, and by October pounds and shelters will be overflowing with newborn kittens and pregnant cats. Last year 17,407 cats were destroyed in NSW pounds, so we can see the majority of these animals will be born simply to die.
If you have an undesexed pet or you know of someone who does, now is the time to desex before they reproduce. This is also the time of year to think very seriously about desexing any strays in your area. You might not be able to commit to caring for them in the long term, but if you don't desex them now you can guarantee that very soon their numbers will explode. Each litter will contain on average between 4 - 6 kittens, any female kittens will be ready to breed by 4 months of age and as soon as they give birth they will be ready to mate again. The simpler solution is to desex that one stray now before it gets out of hand.
Remember, in terms of population control, it is just as important to desex male cats as it is to desex female cats. Click here for more information.

For the month of September CatRescue is running a Subsidised Desexing Programme at selected vets around Sydney. This programme is not just for people who own cats or people experiencing financial difficulty, but for people who are feeding stray cats not yet desexed. The fee is $40 per cat (female or male) and you can also elect to have your cat microchipped for $35 (although this is not compulsory if entering the programme).
We encourage everyone to apply - if there is one singular message we want to get out there it's 'Desex Now'! Click here to apply and click here to find out more about desexing. |
