There are two ways to receive digital television.
connect your antenna RF cable to a digital television receiver set-top box then connecting the set-top box to your current analog television screen using AV cables
connecting your antenna RF cable to an integrated digital television
Do I need to upgrade my antenna system?
Probably not. But if after acquiring your new digital television receiver you are experiencing interference problems, you may need to install better cables or even a better antenna.
People in home units may need to check the capability of the antenna and signal distribution system in the building to receive digital television.
MATV System Do's and Don'ts
Guidelines for the consumer or body corporate
Many existing communal or Master Antenna (MATV) systems in Australian home units, apartment blocks and hotels etc will need to be upgraded in order to accommodate Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT). The level of upgrading required will vary greatly depending on the existing installation, however it is perceived that many installations will require a significant refurbishment.
This is because many existing installations were designed to cater for the reticulation of analog services only and were never designed to meet the technical requirements of DTT reception. Digital television transmissions are now available from free-to-air TV stations in most areas of capital and major provincial cities.
Digital television, with its widescreen pictures and high quality sound, is not a simple replacement of analog TV's standard picture and sound. Each broadcaster's digital TV signal will offer viewers a range of services which could include additional programs, high definition pictures, various enhanced sound modes, and interactive services, and these will be expanded over time.
Any new MATV system should provide to carry the entirety of these DTT signals on RF channel frequency and unaltered to the apartment/home-unit's outlets. Any system that separates the various services from a broadcaster's DTT signal will result in failure of the MATV system to make available the complete range of new features to viewers through their digital television receivers.
Most cities will have 5 major digital TV providers (i.e. from the ABC, SBS, Seven/Prime; Nine/WIN and Ten/Southern Cross - additionally in some cities there may be 2 more). Digital TV formats are also available on Pay TV, satellite and soon on cable services. These too may feature additional services.
DBA has provided the following guidelines for the consumer or body corporate. These guidelines should provide a good outcome for the reception of free-to-air television by means of MATV systems. |
