Few days ago, i had a chat with my British friend about office politics. This guy has lived in China for over 3 years.
I told him it is noticeable western people are better at office politics than Chinese. They all look nice and polite and friendly. But they will not hesitate one second to backstab someone or lie to get their way or take someone else’s work as their achievement.
For example, Julia Gillard backstabbed Kevin Rudd to be the president. Christina in Grey’s anatomy always pushes hard to get her way. If you have watched Biggest Loser, you can see they eliminate the one who is more likely to win.
My friend’s conclusion is that western people are mainly interested in short term effect. They never wanted to form a long term relationship with anyone so they can do pretty nasty things behind with no shame. Chinese people on the other hand are more willing to form a long term relationship with anyone everyone, so they are unlikely going to trash other people.
For the same reason, western people want to appear friendly to everyone to make a quick good impression. Chinese people are only friendly with their actual friends.
To survive in Western world, we have to learn their rules.
Politeness is a skill that needs education. But it is definitely not a standard to classify people.
