The excuses we normally use are:
1. software system crashed
2. Key person resigned and a mess has been left behind
3. Personal reasons for pppl in charge of BAS preparation: in emergency room, seriously depressed, kids undergoing operation, etc etc,
But in your case, the BASs have been overdue for too long, so those excuses above don't really make sense. If inproper excuse used, it might make the situation even worse, and you already owed a lot to the ATO.
If I were you, I will just tell them the truth:
1. It's your first company, you are not familiar with all the procedures.
2. It's a dormant company with no transactions incurred during those years, which means a nil BAS. And can be proved by nil company income tax returns lodged for those years.
3. You honestly thought you don't have to lodge a BAS is there's no transactions at all. And you thought If there's a need to lodge the relevant BAS, a reminder will be sent to you.
4. And you moved. SINCE YOU DIDN'T RECIEVE ANY CORRESPONDE FROM THE ATO FOR A LONG TIME, you unfortunately forgot to update the address with the ATO.
5. Hence those unlodged BASs for all these years, it's truely an honest mistake. It never happened before in your case, and it will never happen again.
6. Try sweat talk to the ATO person. Explain your situation thoroughly and stress the point that it's an unfortunately but honest mistake, and you have a good record with the ATO apart from this matter.
Hope it helps, and good luck. |
