Skilled Migration: Announcement of New Skilled Occupations List is Deferred

The Australian Government has delayed the announcement of its new Skilled Occupations List until May, 2010.
Information on the new list of skilled occupations that would provide for migration to Australia under the general skilled program was expected to be available today (30th April, 2010); the Department of Immigration website has been updated today as follows:
The Government is considering the report from Skills Australia containing their Skilled Occupation List. An announcement and publication of the new Skilled Occupation List for Migration purposes will be made in May.
Comment
The introduction of a new SOL was flagged by the Immigration Minister in February, 2010.
It is perhaps no surprise that there is a delay, as we understand that matters such as this are now subject to whole of Government agreement and signing off by the Prime Minister. This opens up the skills list to consideration and lobbying by various interest groups.
Furthermore, a new system of classifying occupations is being introduced (called the ANZSCO, replacing the ASCO) - this is also likely to create practical delays in the implementation of a new SOL while old classifications are mapped to the new ANZSCO classifications.
The Immigration Minister and his Department have indicated that the new SOL will come into effect on the 1st of July, 2010. We believe that today's announcement makes that prospect less probable. |
