Rio Tinto appoints China managing director
RIO Tinto has moved to re-establish its strong relationship with China, appointing a new managing director for the economic powerhouse.
The global giant said Ian Bauert would take on the new role, with immediate effect and will be based in Shanghai.
Chief executive Tom Albanese said the new role underlines the importance the company places on enhancing its relationship with China.
“I am deeply committed to developing our relationship with China,” he said in a statement.
“Ian’s experience and leadership will provide strategic direction and help guide all aspects of our engagement with China, one of our most important partners.”
Mr Bauert will lead Rio Tinto’s 160-strong team of employees in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

He established the company’s first office in China more than 25 years ago and has since held numerous senior positions with Rio Tinto.
Mr Bauert replaces Anthony Loo, who left the position last year, after Australian citizen Stern Hu and three of his colleagues were arrested on allegations of stealing state secrets and bribery.
The Rio executives were charged with industrial espionage and bribery on August 12 last year, five weeks after their detention on July 5. They are now awaiting a decision on wether they will face trial.
Mr Baueret was Rio Tinto's managing director of sales and marketing for iron ore and is already based in Shanghai. |
