I am a licensed, law-abiding firearm owner writing to express serious concern about the direction of the proposed NSW firearm reforms and the broader approach to public safety following the recent attack at Bondi Junction.
I do not support reforms that further restrict compliant licence holders while failing to confront the ideological and social drivers of violence and extremism.
I am particularly concerned that recent policy decisions and political inaction have contributed to an environment in which antisemitism has become normalised. Recognising a Palestinian state prior to the release of Israeli hostages, combined with the continued allowance of weekly demonstrations where explicitly antisemitic slogans and conduct are publicly displayed without consequence, sends a troubling message.
When extremist rhetoric is repeatedly visible in public spaces and left unchallenged by political leadership, it produces foreseeable social consequences. Over time, the normalisation of hatred increases the risk of radicalisation and violent action by individuals inclined toward extremism. Public safety is not improved by ignoring these ideological drivers or by redirecting responsibility toward lawful and unrelated groups.
Australia already has some of the strictest firearm laws in the world. Licensed firearm owners operate under rigorous background checks, genuine-reason requirements, secure storage rules, and ongoing compliance obligations. If failures exist, they should be identified through proper review and enforcement, not through rushed legislative changes that primarily affect those who already comply with the law.
If the government is serious about preventing future acts of violence, I strongly urge a different focus:
Strengthening scrutiny of individuals exhibiting racial, religious, or politically motivated hatred
Actively monitoring and addressing extremist ideology and radicalisation pathways
Ensuring that assessments of firearm licensing and continued suitability give greater weight to demonstrated extremist beliefs, threats, or patterns of hate-driven behaviour
Addressing who should never have access to firearms is far more effective than imposing broader restrictions on those who already meet Australia’s stringent legal standards.
I urge you to oppose reforms that unfairly penalise lawful citizens and instead support evidence-based measures that directly confront extremism, enforce existing laws consistently, and genuinely improve community safety.
Yours sincerely,
xxx
