China has moved to permit further agricultural imports from the United States, including barley, just days after it blocked exports of the grain as well as beef from Australia.
It will allow imports of barley and blueberries from the US from Thursday, according to notices posted on China’s customs website.
China’s largest state-owned food processor, manufacturer and trader, China Oil and Foodstuffs Corporation (COFCO), also hinted it was likely to speed up buying American farm goods during an online industry conference on Thursday, reported Reuters.
According to COFCO International vice-general manager of China, Zhang Hua, the focus will be on soybeans, which is a top US export to China. Zhang added that pressures for adequate soybean supplies in China were expected to be high from May to September.

This comes as Australia is still reeling from China’s plan to impose a tariff of up to 80 per cent on its barley exports due to anti-dumping allegations. It also suspended imports from four Australian beef processing plants due to labelling and health certificate violations earlier this week.
While the moves raised suspicions that Beijing was using trade to punish Canberra for lending support to the international call to investigate the origins of the coronavirus outbreak, there have also been suggestions from analysts that this could open up a route for China to increase imports of the two agriculture products from the US, helping it meet its purchase obligations under the phase one trade deal amid rising pressure from Washington.
