Well it's not really about make/model recommendations. Consider the following criteria and do some research.
- Look for a naturally asperated 4-cylinder. No tubo. Also research an engine that will NOT crash the valves if the timing belt breaks or slips.
- Avoid wheels 18" or larger
- Keep to normal transmissions. Avoid DST and CVT versions.
- Avoid AWD systems keep to FWD. For a car it doesn't help enough to justify the expense.
- Look to website self fix it demonstrations to see how difficult repairs are done. To change the battery is a simple job or is it buried under several other parts. Same for air filters, alternator, A/C compressor, water pump, accessory belt.
- Also look for common cars, avoid niche cars built in limited quantities.
- When you find a car that meets the above criteria and your budget it most likely be a rather unexceptional car, but will move you from point A to B with the least drama.
