Diversity Council Australia (DCA) is the only independent, not-for-profit workplace diversity advisor to business in Australia.
DCA does not believe that introducing English language testing, with a minimum requirement of “competent” will significantly improve outcomes of Australia’s migration program, or social cohesion.
Indeed, as DCA’s members have told us, many of their families came to Australia with limited or no English, and have now made a multi-generational contribution to Australia:

My parents and I came to Australia in 1985. We were actually living in a Malaysian refugee camp before being granted humanitarian visas under the Fraser government. Whilst we did not know any English when we arrived in Australia, my parents worked hard and ran a small business in Ashfield and introduced Vietnamese pork rolls (banh mi) to the community!
I studied in our public education system, did a Commerce degree at UNSW and have worked in the tech industry for over 12 years. I have held leadership roles in recruitment and HR for IBM Australia & New Zealand. My focus is increasing diversity in STEM to ensure Australia continues to innovate for the betterment of our citizens.
