I actually removed the unit from the hinge, and was able to pry the battery out easily with a pair of needle nose pliers. Anything would have worked though, you just need to lift the end of the battery up and it comes out easily.

So to follow up. Definitely easier to remove the battery when the unit is detached from the hinge. Also, don't forget to discharge any residual power and reset the unit while the battery is removed. Hold the test button for about 15 seconds. I didn't do this and had to figure out why the units kept chirping even with a new battery!

BATTERY REPLACEMENT

To replace battery, unlatch unit from mounting base and remove the battery from compartment. Replace the old battery with a fresh one and close unit. Verify that the green LED is on.
To ensure proper operation, the battery should be replaced once a year.
Smoke alarm cannot be closed properly without battery in place.
