Appeals
You may appeal against the decision of the selection committee if you feel there were special factors which might have prevented your child from gaining higher test marks or school assessment scores and which might not have been considered by the selection committee.
Applicants can appeal on one of two grounds only:
Factors which may have prevented the student from gaining higher test marks
OR
Factors which may have prevented the student from gaining higher school assessment scores.
All appeals must be supported by relevant documentary evidence.
Appeals must be received by the primary school principal no later than Thursday 23 July 2015 and returned to the Unit by Thursday 30 July 2015. Late appeals will not be accepted.
Appeals will generally not be considered valid if made on the following grounds:
the same grounds as those submitted in an illness/misadventure claim
illness, anxiety, stress at the time of the test. These are medical matters that should have been treated just after the test
suspected misalignment of answers. These should have been treated just after the test
suspected problems with the teacher, for example extended teacher absence or changes of teacher or school
the process used to determine academic merit, such as lack of school scores which can be moderated or the use of IQ test results in the Interstate/overseas process
lack of familiarity with the process, language, culture and/or education system
the student's academic performance on other measurements or reports, such as IQ score, NAPLAN, ICAS testing, school reports or certificates or scholarship testing
academic performance before Year 5 or after December 2014
anything voluntary and avoidable that stopped the child from sitting the test or from doing his or her best in the test, such as participation in entertainment, sporting events, attendance at excursions, camps or a holiday trip.
If submitting an appeal, parents should:
download the official appeal form
complete the parents' section of the appeal stating the grounds for appeal and attaching supporting documentation
pass the appeal on to the primary principal no later than Thursday 23 July 2015.
Primary principals should:
complete the principals' section of the appeal and send the form to the Unit by Friday 30 July 2015.
Appeals panels:
meet in September 2015 to consider all valid appeals. Please note that the appeals panel may consult with the primary school principal.
The Unit:
sends advice about the outcome of the appeal to parents in October 2015.
Appeals about residency
The application information for Year7 placement in a selective high school clearly states that candidates must generally be Australian or New Zealand citizens (living in NSW) or holders of a visa granting permanent residency in Australia before they can be made an offer of placement. Permanent residents of New Zealand are treated the same way as temporary residents of Australia and are not eligible for placement in a selective high school. Applicants who qualify for placement on academic grounds but do not meet the residency requirements at the time of the outcome may appeal for special consideration in extenuating circumstances, such as where written proof shows that the visa is expected to be granted in the near future.
