Olympics dawn - but no Aussie flag

The spectacular Water Cube is dressed, ready for the swimming events on the first day of the Olympic Games, but Australian swimmers, hoping to win up to 10 gold medals, might notice something missing: the Australian flag.

Thirty-three countries have their flags hung high above the venue's public seating. The flag of the international swimming body, FINA, is there, too. China, as the host country, has two flags on display, one of them next to that of the previous host, Greece.

But the flag of Australia - the one country tipped to fiercely battle the domination of the United States - has been left hanging out to dry. No one at the Water Cube could explain the omission.

This is not the first flag-related issue of the Beijing Olympics.

Yesterday British Olympic official Clive Woodward complained in an official chefs de mission meeting that the English flag had been hung at the badminton venue, not the Union Jack, an oversight that will upset Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish competitors.
