端午节了,摘录其中的一个端午节由来的故事
Story related to the Dragon Boat Festival
Qu Yuan(340-278 BC)was a patriotic poet and a loyal official of the state of Chu during the Warring States Period.
Qu Yuan was born in a ruling family and severd in high offices. He was the number one advisor of the Kingdom of Chu,and dedicated his whole life to assistiong the king to build the State of Chu stronger.
He advised the King to ally with the State of Qi to fight against the most powerful State of Qin. However,he was slandred by jealous officials and accused of treason, and the King dismissed and exiled him.
During his exile,Qu Yuan wrote a great deal of enduring poems showing his love and passion for his country, some of which are still very famous in China.
In 278 BC,the Qin State conquered the capital of Chu.On hearing of the defeat,Qu Yuan in great despair committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month.
When they heard of Qu Yuan's death, the local people were very sad,and rowed out on the river to search for his body, but were unable to find him.To preserve his body, the locals paddled their boats up and down the river, hitting the water with their paddles and beating drums to scare evil spirits away. They threw lumps of rice into the river to feed the fish,so that they would not eat Qu Yuan's body.
Since then, people in the Miluo River area have followed similar practices to commemorate Qu Yuan on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.Gradually, rowing boats developed into dragon boat racing, the umps of rice became sticky rice dumplings(zongzi) traditionally eaten during festival.

Walking: The 'Wonder Drug'
If you want to get healthy or stay healthy, there is one easy activity to add to your day – walking.

"Walking is the closest thing we have to a wonder drug," says Thomas Friedman. Friedman is the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States.

And he is not alone in considering walking a great exercise.

Health experts at the Mayo Clinic, the American Heart Association, the Arthritis Foundation, Harvard Medical School and many other health research groups agree.

You may think that simply taking a walk is not enough to make a big difference. You might think that you need do something strenuous like running to stay healthy.

Well, a new study says that is not true. It finds that walking may be as good for us as running.

Running is a high-impact activity and can be hard on the body. So, many people cannot run. Walking, it seems, has all of the advantages and none of the disadvantages of running.

The American Heart Association explains the findings on its website. Walking quickly, or briskly, can lower your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

Researchers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California did the study. Over a six-year period, they studied about 33,000 runners in the National Runners' Health Study and just over 15,000 walkers in the National Walkers' Health Study.

The researchers found that the same energy used for brisk walking and vigorous running "resulted in similar reductions in risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and possibly coronary heart disease over the study's six years."

The study also found that the more people walked or ran each week, the more their health benefits increased.

Walking in New York City
Walking in New York City
Walking is easy, fun and accessible

Dr. Russell Pate is a professor of exercise science at the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. He is also a volunteer at the American Heart Association. He commented on the study on the association's website.

Pate says the health benefits of walking are not "all or nothing." If your goal is to walk for 30 minutes a day, you can split that into three 10 minute walks.

Walking, he adds, has the lowest dropout rate of any exercise. People who start walking regularly usually stick with it.

Pate says what many other health experts say: Walking is one of the easiest and safest exercises a person can do. With walking, he says, there is no learning curve. That means you do not need to learn a lot to get results.

Walking requires no special skills or equipment. You can do it anywhere. It fits easily into your daily schedule. You can walk at work. You can park father away from a store entrance. You can take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Walking is a great exercise for beginners. If you are out of shape or getting back into shape after an illness or accident, walking is perfect. You can do a little at a time, or as we like to say, take "baby steps."

So, walking lowers your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. But many other studies have found that walking benefits the body and mind in other ways.

For example, regular brisk walking can help you:

Keep a healthy weight.
Improve your mood. Walking releases natural painkilling chemicals in the body. A study at California State University, Long Beach showed that the more steps people took during the day, the better their moods were.
Sharpens your mind. Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, studied 6,000 women ages 65 and older. They found that age-related memory loss was lower for those who walked more.
Keep your joints healthy. The Arthritis Foundation (U.S.) explains on its website that most of the material that makes up our joints has no direct blood supply. Our joints get "nutrition from joint fluid that circulates as we move." When you walk, your joints get this "life-giving fluid," which means your joints stay stronger.
Improve your creativity. A 2014 study by Stanford University found that walking, indoors or outdoors, improved the ability to think creatively and solve problems.
Best of all, you can easily change where, when and how you walk. You can walk with your friends, co-workers, family or your dog. Or you can walk alone.

The faster, farther and more often you walk, the greater the benefits.

Dementia Cases May Triple by 2050 as World Ages
Dementia is the loss of mental abilities caused by brain disorders that affect memory, thinking, behavior and judgment. The most common cause of dementia, especially in older people, is Alzheimer's disease. It causes up to seventy percent of dementia cases.

Worldwide an estimated thirty-six million people are living with dementia. A new report predicts that number will increase to more than one hundred fifteen million by twenty-fifty.

The report is from the World Health Organization and Alzheimer's Disease International. Marc Wortman is the executive director of this group of seventy-eight Alzheimer's associations.

MARC WORTMANN: "There is a new case now in every four seconds, a new case of dementia in the world. Only ten years ago, it was calculated at one in seven seconds, so it is speeding up. And if you look into the future projections, it may be close to one in every second by the year twenty-fifty. So we need to act. We need to do something to stop this epidemic."

The number of cases in the heavily populated developing world is expected to grow as more people live longer. The report says more than half of those with dementia now live in low- and middle-income countries. This number is likely to rise to more than seventy percent by twenty-fifty.

People are living longer because of better health care and increasing wealth. But the report says dementia is not a normal part of growing old.

Shekhar Saxena is the director of mental health and substance abuse research at the WHO.

SHEKHAR SAXENA: "Dementia is often not recognized. It is commonly mistaken for an age-related decline in functioning because it can mimic age-related problems, and also it progresses slowly. Even in high-income countries, only one-fifth to one-half of the cases of dementia are routinely recognized. This percentage is obviously much lower in middle and low-income countries."

Martin Prince is a professor at Kings College London. He says many people wrongly believe that dementia and Alzheimer's disease are not problems in poorer countries.

MARTIN PRINCE: "There have been some more studies done recently in western Africa, which, I think give the lie to the notion that Alzheimer's disease is very rare amongst all the people in Africa. There are fewer older people because life expectancy is shorter, particularly with the ravages of HIV. But, amongst people who live into old age, the prevalence of dementia looks quite similar to high-income countries."

The world currently spends more than six hundred billion dollars a year to treat and care for people with
dementia. Yet the WHO says only eight countries currently have national programs in place to deal with dementia.

It urges greater efforts to identify dementia early, educate the public and provide better care. Dementia may be incurable, but health officials say much can be done to improve the lives of people who have it, and support their families and caregivers.
