Re that Herald Sun Article. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news ... rf7jo-1226070515343
Two things:
1. The Report says NOTHING like how it was reported by Herald Sun;
2. HS are for bogans.
Re (1): what the report actually says is that Australia should focus on attracting skilled migrants that Australia requires, because Aus has a skills-shortage. Because China, India etc are poorer (lower per capita GDP), their workers are less likely to be ones required by Australia. So the challenge for Aus is to ensure that it takes migrants with the needed skills.
If we accept that a country has a right to select its immigrants (leaving aside refugees), then there is nothing wrong with this statement. Australia does not have much manufacturing, so allowing migrants who worked in manufacturing are less helpful then allowing migrants who are, say, skilled miners.
That’s all the report is saying, Aus need to attract migrant workers with skills required by Australia. You can read the report here: http://www.immi.gov.au/media/pub ... pdate/nom-may11.pdf
Re (2): HS thrives on mis-quoting and mis-stating government reports to drive its agenda. Its readers mainly just rely on the headlines, and does not want to (and probably unable to) delve into the report/discussion beyond a superficial level.
An example is a recent report on crime statistics in Victoria. The Police reported that the crime “rate” (ie. Number of crimes per person) has gone down. The actual numbers show that the number of crimes had gone up, but because the population had also gone up, the rate had come down. This is simple statistics. China may have huge GDP, but because it also has huge population, you cannot just focus on the actual GDP; GDP per capita is a better reflection.
The HS got hold the report and reported “Police lies about crime number”. Enough said. |
