Following the cryptocurrency crackdown in China shutting down all crypto exchanges and ICOs, Chinese investors have turned to the Korean market for opportunities in the cryptocurrency space leading to concerns in Korea that their local crypto-trading industry may become dominated by Chinese investors.

Multiple Chinese-funded exchanges like Zeniex, OK Coin, and Gate.io have found a home in Korea following the harsh restrictions set out by the Chinese government. Zeniex, an exchange which received investment from China’s largest internet security company Qihoo 360 and is connected to Bishije and Jinse Chaijing crypto/blockchain media outlets, is now based in Korea. The 18th largest exchange in the world, Gate.io, is a Chinese exchange that also started operations in Korea this month, as well as OK Coin entering the market last month.

Crypto-trading and awareness in Korea is booming and the country does not have strict regulations regarding the establishment of cryptocurrency exchanges at this time, making it an appealing option for Chinese business looking for regulatory havens close to home.

Where China’s ban is firmly in place, South Korea’s National Assembly proposed yesterday that the nation’s ban on ICOs be lifted, and regulators are taking a soft approach with talks of classing cryptocurrencies as financial assets. The Korean influence on the crypto-market is so great that when the nation’s largest exchange Upbit was investigated for fraud earlier this year the market saw a significant decline in value.

As the influx of Chinese funding continues to grow, experts are concerned that the digital currency market in Korea will be entirely controlled by Chinese exchanges unless regulations are put in place to curb the mass exodus of foreign companies.

“Chinese virtual currency exchanges are not yet competitive, but they are key players in the global market,” said an official in the local cryptocurrency industry. “If the Korean virtual money market moves into the system and Chinese exchanges receive real name accounts in the future, the Chinese exchanges will become a big threat to Korean exchanges.”

Both proponents and opponents of new technology tend to come up with extreme (or overly romantic) theories about it.

This was certainly the case for bitcoin and the debate about whether the world's first cryptocurrency would replace all global currencies. However, this tendency may also underly the seeming contradiction that large corporations, which typically exert centralized control over a product or service, are embracing new decentralized technologies such as blockchain and the token economy.

Kakao is a corporate giant that dominates the Korean mobile market. Its mobile messaging app Kakaotalk accounts for 94 percent of the domestic market. Based on this overwhelming market share, Kakao has successfully expanded its operations into markets such as advertising, gaming, mobile banking, taxi services and music.

As a result, Kakao employed 2,600 staff as of 2017 and recorded annual sales of 1.9723 trillion Korean won ($1.8 billion) with an operating profit of 165.3 billion KRW ($154 million).

The company recently announced a new blockchain business.

As one of the leading "middlemen" that has taken control of the mobile platform market in Korea, if Kakao chooses to embrace blockchain – which eliminates the middleman and allows users to directly exchange value – what would happen to the massive profits the company currently earns in its intermediary role?

The 'middleman' exists for a reason
Seeking the answer to that question and more, CoinDesk spoke to Jason Han, the CEO of Ground X – a Kakao subsidiary that has been charged with taking forward the firm's blockchain strategy.

"Will the middleman really disappear? Are the middlemen all bad? I don't think people are thinking seriously about these questions," he said.

Han is also skeptical about whether the numerous ICO projects currently underway will be able to produce services on the same level as companies like Kakao or Amazon.

"ICOs have an odd structure. You've already made all of your money by the time you start. Let's say you can't dispose of the money for two years. Two years go by very quickly. You spend those two years working on development to get your smart contracts working, then release your service. Maybe 1,000 users sign up. But you need something more to attract more users beyond that. You have to spend a lot on marketing and go through all kinds of trouble to get your name out there. But why bother doing all that? You've already made all your money," he said.

Before joining Kakao in March, Han worked as the CTO of an investment company called FuturePlay, where he was responsible for evaluating the technology of companies that were potential investment targets.

"From my investment experience, there is a huge gap between what startups promise in their white papers and what they actually deliver," he said.

That gap cannot be bridged simply by developing good smart contracts or designing a good token economy, argued Han.

"Those who have real experience in business will know. When you finish development, it's not the end of the project – it's the beginning. Figuring out how to close that gap is a business problem," he continued, adding:

"Until last year, nobody talked about business when they were making dapps (decentralized applications), but I think things will be different this year. Decentralization can't be the core of a service, it's just a method of providing the service. Tokens can't be the only kind of value that you offer to users. Tokens are only part of the value. What's important is the essence of the business itself."

Pinpointing the benefits
Kakao's proposed blockchain platform, Han said, could be summed up as "partial or gradual decentralization."

"Everyone is using blockchain these days because it's popular," he said. "I wish people would stop trying to put everything on blockchain."

Some of Kakao's services could be decentralized, while others cannot, Han explained. Rather than uploading a whole service to blockchain, certain functions of the components that make up the service could be separated out for decentralization and tokenization.

"For example, let's say that we convert the mileage points system into tokens. From the company's perspective, it's just changing the money into a token format. If we did that, it would be more about making mileage more useful rather than sharing our profits with users. When you tokenize non-core aspects of the service, it allows the company to retain its profitability model while also expanding user inflow. With a forward-looking approach, tokens could also be used to provide incentives to users, but in that case there need to be benefits for Kakao as well," Han said.

So, what are the benefits Kakao is seeking through blockchain?

"The token economy is a business model that no one could have imagined before," he said. "Until now, Kakao has only operated in Korea, but through blockchain we could expand into the global market. That means taking a portion of the profits we earn as an intermediary and using it to expand our market by sharing it with users."

For example, he said, if Kakao were currently earning 100 units in profits, then growing the market to 1,000 units would eventually allow the firm to give 300 back to users and keep 700 for itself.

"What kind of strategy could Kakao adopt if it wanted to export its successful service to the Asian market? Each country already has one or two established services. The only solution I can think of is offering incentives through blockchain. With blockchain, you can shake up the existing order."

Competitors on both sides
Kakao's longstanding rival Naver is also jumping into the blockchain industry with its subsidiary, LINE Plus.

North America-based messenger service Kik is also working on a blockchain business called KIN, while Telegram has raised $1.7 billion through an ICO, the largest amount ever recorded in a token sale.

"The biggest concern for dapps on ethereum or EOS is how to attract users," Han said. "Messenger services like Telegram have an advantage since they already have a platform with an established user base. This is why we need to pay attention to what these companies are doing. On the other hand, those messaging services have lots of users but no other services, while Kakao already provides a wide range of services."

Although Han was skeptical of ICO projects, he does not believe that all of these startups are destined to fail.

"Twenty years ago, nobody could have imagined a company like Google or Amazon," he said. "There are so many teams working hard on their own projects, and some of them will be able to create new types of commerce that are completely different from anything we currently know. Some of them may be able to create innovative business models by focusing on decentralization. With blockchain, I think this will only take five or 10 years, not 20."

Han provided the advertising market as an example to explain the competition he expects to see in the token economy of the future. In that industry, there are already many blockchain projects seeking to connect advertisers and consumers, thereby generating economic benefits for consumers.

At first, it will be difficult to completely remove the middleman and make the service 100 percent decentralized. Since it takes money and effort to attract advertisers and consumers, at first the middleman might take 70 percent of advertising revenue, while consumers would receive the remaining 30 percent. This model would already be competitive against current advertising agencies, where the middleman doesn't pay a cent to consumers.

Competition may lead some companies to offer 50 percent to consumers, then 70 percent, then 100 percent, eventually creating a completely decentralized system.

"Right now, nobody knows what kinds of services might come out of the blockchain world," Han says. "We haven't seen them yet. Steemit has shown us some of the potential, but nobody knows how far it will grow. But if you sit on your hands for a while and then something new comes out, it will already be too late. In this situation, having a go is the right thing to do."

Technical issues and ICOs
LINE Plus recently announced that it plans to create a blockchain platform using the ICON network. Kakao also plans to use an existing blockchain platform. Since most platforms released so far are open source, Kakao will use the source code of a suitable existing platform and add its own unique functions on top.

Han explained that Kakao was considering many existing platforms including ethereum, tendermint, cosmos, quorum, EOS and Hyperledger.

"Ethereum has the highest level of completion," he said. "But if we want to get started quickly then quorum is also a good option. EOS has not yet released its main network, so it is difficult to conduct a deep analysis of the platform."

He added that most existing projects have problems with performance or processing speed, and there are a host of issues outside of that which also need be resolved. The most important factor is providing a user experience that meets the expectations of the average users.

"If a platform has a very well-refined philosophy, will users be willing to pay for that value? You need to be issued a private key and install a wallet, but if you lose your private key, you lose all your money. Even the person who created the platform can't recover the money for you. It's ridiculous to the average users. Performance and speed are the basics, but even once you've got that sorted, it's just the beginning. The first step for us is figuring out what we need to do to make Kakao's services work and how to support millions of users accessing a service at the same time."

Kakao plans to launch its main network alongside meaningful services (dapps) by the end of the year. It appears that the first of those will be mainly created by Kakao itself, as well as external companies that already provide it with services.

"There are outside companies that are seeking a platform for a reverse ICO, and we are willing to give them a ride on our platform if they are a good fit," Han said. "We believe that the service should come first, and the platform later. A platform is useless by itself. You need to have a target service and then find a platform that will allow you to perform that service. We are not completely ruling out startups without existing services, but our main focus is on providing services that are already established.

With the Korean government effectively banning ICOs last year, issuing tokens is also a sensitive issue. When Kakao announced the establishment of its blockchain subsidiary in March, Financial Services Commission chairman Choi JongKu reaffirmed his negative view on token sales. Kakao has already made it clear that it has no plans to engage in an ICO to raise funds.

Han concluded:

"Issuing tokens and listing on an exchange are two separate issues. There are several creative ways to issue tokens, including through an ICO, an airdrop or offering tokens as rewards for active participation on the platform like Steemit does."

Weiss Ratings

The latest highly controversial Weiss Cryptocurrency Ratings have been released and with regards to "Technology/Adoption" (capabilities of the code, as well as real world performance/adoption), Cardano and EOS have come out on top (beating the other 91 cryptocurrencies covered by the report).

Cardano (Ada) and EOSIO (EOS) both managed to get an "A-" grade, leaving NEO (NEO), Ripple (XRP), and Steem (STEEM) in joint second place ("B+" grade), and Bitcoin (BTC), BitShares (BTS), Ethereum (ETH), IOTA (IOTA), and Stellar Lumens (XLM) in joint third place.

Financial ratings agency, Weiss Ratings, which was founded in 1971, started covering cryptoassets (tokens and coins) on 24 January 2018, when it launched a new website called Weiss Cryptocurrency Ratings. The idea was to provide a weekly paid report that gave an overall rating for each cryptocurrency (initially only 74 were covered), as well as two component grades: an "Invest Risk/Reward" grade and a "Technology/Adoption" grade. Grades range from A+ (best) to F (worst).

Weiss Ratings says that these grades should be interpreted as follows:

A: "excellent"
B: "good"
C: "fair"
D: "weak"
E: "very week"
F: "failed" or "fraud"
Here is what the three types of ratings mean:

Overall Rating
This is "a comprehensive, balanced overview of all factors, based on a complex algorithm — not an average of the component grades. When making choices, investors should focus primarily on this overall rating. Caveat: Although based exclusively on a disciplined, objective review of hard data, in the final analysis, each rating represents our opinion — not a guarantee of future outcomes."

Investment Risk/Reward Rating
Risk shows "the downside potential investors should be aware of, reflecting price volatility and magnitude of recent declines" while Reward indicates "profit potential based mostly on price momentum and recent returns to investors". The combined grade for investment risk and reward might be a useful tool for short-term trading.

Technology/Adoption Rating
The two components here are Technology, which looks at software capabilities, taking into factors such as "level of anonymity, sophistication of monetary policy, governance capabilities, ability or flexibility to improve code, energy efficiency, scaling solutions, interoperability with other blockchains," and Adoption, which takes into factors such as actual real world performance (e.g. in terms of transaction speed, network security, and decentralization of mining) and developer/enterprise/public adoption. Here, the combined grade for technology and adoption could be a useful tool for long-term investing.

Here is how Cardano and EOS scored in each of these categories:

To give you an idea how Cardano and EOS did compared with some of the other popular cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Iota, Litecoin, Monero, NEM, Ripple, and TRON got the following grades in these three categories:

Bitcoin: "B-"; "D+"; "B"
Bitcoin Cash: "C-"; "C-"; "C-"
Ethereum: "B-"; "C-"; "B"
Iota: "B-"; "C-"; "B"
Litecoin: "C+"; "D+"; "B-"
Monero: "C"; "D+"; "C+"
NEM: "C+", "C-"; "B-"
Ripple: "B-"; "D+"; "B+"
TRON: "B-"; "C-"; "B-"
It is interesting that when these ratings were launched in late January 2018, the overall ratings for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Cardano, EOS, and NEO were "C+", "B", and "B-", "B", and "B-", meaning that, for example, Bitcoin has gone from "C+" to "B-", while Cardano has gone from "B-" to "B". However, it is important to note that these ratings are updated weekly, and traders/investors should expect frequent upgrades/downgrades.

At the time these crypto ratings were first launched, Weiss Ratings founder Dr. Martin D. Weiss was interviewed on CNBC, and made the following comment:

"What we've done is build a model, a computer model, that looks at cryptocurrencies from many different angles, and provide a reasoned rigorous research that investors need so desperately right now in this space."

Dr. Martin Weiss, Founder of Weiss Ratings
When Ari Paul, the chief invetsment officer at crypto investment firm BlockTower Capital heard about these ratings, he told CNBC via email:

"Weiss' cryptocurrency ratings are a great example of the ongoing institutionalization of the cryptocurrency industry and a healthy addition... Their rating of Bitcoin suggests a misunderstanding of the core value proposition of cryptocurrency, however, as they seem to overvalue transaction capacity, and undervalue protocol stability, security, and decentralization."

Bittrex Gets Bank Agreement to Help You Buy Bitcoin With Dollars
By Lily Katz

U.S. crypto exchange to offer fiat trading to corporate users
Firm will work with Signature Bank, other financial firms
Bittrex Inc., a Seattle-based cryptocurrency exchange that lets users swap nearly 200 different digital coins, said it forged banking agreements that will allow some customers to trade in U.S. dollars.

The closely held firm said the pact will let corporate clients in some states buy virtual tokens using dollars -- a move that could help the trading venue bring in more users. Bittrex is working with New York-based Signature Bank, which will hold the dollar-denominated funds, along with other financial firms.

“It’s been a long path,” Bittrex Chief Executive Officer Bill Shihara said in an interview. “It’s not just about banks being able to trust Bittrex. It’s about banks being able to trust crypto in general. And I think it’s really showing that crypto is turning the corner in terms of mainstream acceptance.”

Larger financial institutions, bound to strict government regulations on money laundering and customer verification, have mostly avoided putting their reputations at risk by getting involved with an industry that many still associate with criminal activity. As a result, some virtual-currency marketplaces are “crypto-to-crypto” only, meaning that they allow customers to trade using digital money, not dollars.

Some banks are coming around. Coinbase, one of the biggest U.S. crypto trading venues, has developed relationships with Cross River Bank, Metropolitan Bank and Silvergate Bank in the U.S., and recently secured a Barclays PLC bank account in the U.K. Noble Bank International, based in San Juan, Puerto Rico, took over banking duties for Bitfinex last year after the exchange was dumped by Wells Fargo & Co., three people familiar with the matter said earlier this month.

“They really do look and pore through the entire business,” Shihara said. “They want to make sure that we’ve got robust AML/KYC processes, that we’ve got the right controls on our finances. They do background checks and everything. They really look at our business soup to nuts.”

Bittrex, which has more than 3 million customers globally, is launching fiat trading on Thursday for Bitcoin, Tether and TrueUSD. The service will initially be available only to corporate customers in Washington, California, New York and Montana for regulatory reasons, but the firm said it plans to expand the offering to retail investors eventually.

The Internet Trends report, which was compiled by with help from Kleiner Perkins Partners, Hillhouse Capital, writes that it “use data to tell stories of business-related trends we focus on. We hope others take the ideas, build on them & make them better.”

Meeker’s report also shows that interest in cryptocurrency is increasing, using the growth of crypto exchange and wallet Coinbase users to demonstrate this trend.

Cryptocurrency and blockchain courses are in existence all over the world, with a Brazilian university launching its first crypto-finance Master’s degree in April and an Australian public research university announcing a new course on blockchain this past February.

Some highlights:

A deputy director for the International Monetary Fund's Monetary and Capital Markets Department believes that central banks need to offer "better" fiat currencies in order to fend off any potential competition from cryptocurrencies.

The suggestions came in an article published Thursday, penned by deputy director Dong He. In that article – which boasts the tagline "Crypto assets may one day reduce demand for central bank money" –  He argues that central banks may want to consider adopting some of the concepts in order to "forestall the competitive pressure crypto assets may exert on fiat currencies."

It's a notable statement and one that echoes past remarks from He as well as other IMF officials, including director Christine Lagarde. Indeed, Lagarde, back in March, said during an event that regulators should deploy some elements of the tech in order to "fight fire with fire."

He's argument in the latest piece is based on the possibility that, should cryptocurrencies and crypto-assets see wider adoption, there is a chance that central banks will lose their ability to influence the economy through tactics such as interest rate changes.

The deputy director suggested that tightening regulation could provide a boost for central banks.

"Second, government authorities should regulate the use of crypto assets to prevent regulatory arbitrage and any unfair competitive advantage crypto assets may derive from lighter regulation," He wrote. "That means rigorously applying measures to prevent money laundering and the financing of terrorism, strengthening consumer protection, and effectively taxing crypto transactions."

He also pointed to the idea of central banks creating their own digitized assets that could be exchanged in a peer-to-peer fashion

"For example, they could make central bank money user-friendly in the digital world by issuing digital tokens of their own to supplement physical cash and bank reserves. Such central bank digital currency could be exchanged, peer to peer in a decentralized manner, much as crypto assets are," the article went on to say.

It's an idea that a number of central banks are researching, though opinions differ on the effectiveness of such proposals. Just this week, for example, an official for the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (the region's de facto central bank) said that it currently has no plans for a digital currency launch in spite of its research in the area.

https://etherscan.io/token/0x8dd ... a3663759011dd51e73e

TrueUSD keeps growing, with more than 40 million TUSD tokens supplied and backed by fiat funds in escrow. The asset has also become a part of the Binance ecosystem, also exchangeable for the leading fixed-price coin, Tether (USDT).

TrueUSD has surpassed a $40MM market cap and demand is continuing to grow. The market cap is a reflection of the actual dollars in the escrow account that are backing the TUSD stablecoin. Great to see so much interest in the trading community!

— Rafael Cosman (@RafaelCosman) May 31, 2018
The total supply for TUSD, according to Etherscan, is more tna 41.3 million tokens, distributed over 238 addresses. The reason for the relatively limited number of ETH wallets is that the asset is immediately sent to exchanges.

For TUSD, trading volumes are picking up more consistently, growing to around $14 million in 24 hours - still small-scale compared to the $2.64 billion trading in Tethers. The market for TUSD against Tethers is around $5 million in 25 hours.

But even if, in theory, someone tried to use TUSD as a fiat off-ramp, it would be difficult to move large enough funds.
