Thai developer Nattachai Srirungsukpinij has been ordered to pay $5.5 million to The Star but has so far failed to come up with the dough.
He is the largest of a group of ten “whales” - as big gamblers are known in the industry – who bounced cheques but gambled anyway.
The Supreme Court has ordered the group of gamblers from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia to repay the $23 million in bounced cheques, but the casino believes it wont get its money back.
The Star and other casinos always risk losing large amounts of cash because they agree to cash cheques written by their international high rollers immediately, compared to the three days to cash a cheque at a bank.
The legal action is largely a formality because the casino has very little chance of getting the money back.
Orders from Australian courts are very difficult to enforce overseas and the gamblers at the centre of the case are unlikely to own property or other assets that could be seized to repay the debt.
The group was introduced to gambling in The Star's VIP Sovereign Room through an operator of group gambling tours, known as junkets, who lend gambling money to casino visitors.
But the Asian "junket operator" -- SilkStar -- has gone bust and the casino is now trying to get back $23 million. The others ordered to repay include Pimchaya Wattanakulyothin who owes $799,484 and Vissanu Wiangnak from Chiang Rai in northern Thailand who has been ordered to pay $674,021 after he bounced a $613,000 cheque in June last year.
Somboon Srisombattanakit is to pay $541,980 and Krairurg Kodcha from Bangkok Thailand has been ordered to repay $522,392 for bouncing a $473,000 cheque in May last year.
Singaporean businessman Liong Chong Yap bounced a cheque worth $283,000 in June last year while Phatsita Kiratiphatthananan, is to pay $272,246.
Chin Meng Pun from Semilan in Malaysia has been ordered to repay $96,267 after a $85,000 cheque bounced in May last year and Kok Wah Tee from Selangor in Malaysia has been ordered to pay $93,451 after he bounced a $82,000 cheque in May last year
Kau Lan must pay $85,811.84.
