Thanks for sharing, i enjoyed reading your posts!
Sorry can't type chinese in office, but what do ...
Thank you for your response and encouragement.
Since you have asked me personally about what I meant by "traditional method," I feel obliged to clarify myself.
This thread is supposed to be about how to prepare your children for selective school entrance exam so I will
make it brief. Perhaps learning the piano is related to going to private school? Who knows.
Please note that the decision I have made concerning my daughter and piano is a personal choice for my family.
I am not proposing this be a model for any other family to follow. Parents are free to do as they wish in regard to
the music education of their own children.
"Traditional method" of learning piano, to me, means getting lessons from a piano teacher with the intention to
undergo classical training and graduate AMEB Grade 8 (Certificate of Performance) mainly for the end purpose of
teaching piano in the future. This is known as the "classical stream" of piano learning. It is the most common
"style" or "method" that many Chinese children learn under the wishes of their parents.
Personally speaking, I have nothing against this style as long as people undergo the 9 year program willingly.
The problem is, I personally know of people who have graduated Grade 8 and do not touch the piano again
simply because it does not interest them. It was simply something their parents insisted they do. That is the complaint
I hear coming from many 2nd generation Chinese children who grew up playing piano.
My idea of music in general is that music is primarily for enjoyment. That I believe is the most important purpose
of music (which includes learning to play the piano). Unlike Math and English, learning to play an instrument is not
compulsory. So although learning to play the piano is good, it is not compulsory and should not be compulsory.
Learning to play the piano has no direct link with succeeding in our future careers. There is also very little guarantee
that learning the piano will help you get a sustainable job in the future. Most people do not play the piano and yet
most people are still able to make a decent living.
For me, I love playing the piano. I enjoy it. I even compose music. However, I cannot say the same for my daughter.
She is a different person. She may need more time to discover her artistic or musical interests. Although I encourage
her to play the piano at home for fun, I have made a conscious decision not to outsource this skill. If she wants, I can
teach her myself. If she isn't interested, that's fine by me as well. I will not be paying another teacher to teach her piano.
I have made the decision to allow her to discover music or piano freely for herself whenever she feels it's the right time
for her. This is what I meant by being a "Taoist" when it comes to music.
Taoism is concerned with the "freedom of spirit" when it comes to music. When we look at the history and culture of
music and piano, there are so many styles of music in the world, not only classical. Jazz, Pop, Modern, EDM, Country,
Rock, Blues, Folk, Gospel, you name it, there are so many styles of piano playing and learning. Why do I have to
limit myself and my daughter to just playing "classical" piano? And at the same time, why do I have to outsource that
skill to another teacher?
In the world of art and entertainment which is what music and piano belong to, there are no laws. The main purpose of
art or music is freedom of expression. Furthermore, the highest level of art is being able to express yourself; express
your own individuality and creativity. Yes, you may start by learning to play other people's songs. But then as a truly
creative person, you also end up composing your own music. Creating and playing one's own song from the heart
without reading it from a piece of paper, to me, is the most important goal of music.
Thank you for your time.
