We bought the car last saturday.  End up lifting the budget a bit, but not by much.  bought a car 1.7L petrol 4 cylinder engine, 2010 year, 47800 kms on the Odo.  Dealer throw in 4 new tyres, repaint of rims, door seals, RWC and a service A.  and touch up paint work.

Yarris, Jazz and M 2 are too small, they are not suitable for long distance or freeway driving.  the other ones are too expensive for us... most of them have high milages

If you find that there is no perfect car within your price range, you know that you've had an unrealistic expectation. Just increase your budget or drop your criteria.

we were happy with the other German cars we bought, but we did look at the Japanese cars first, driving wise, German cars win hands down.  they do lose resale value a lot, especially during the first 3 years, but most of the second hand cars are trade ins, good condition and always serviced on time, but yeah, we compromised on the resale value, German cars don't keep values.  service wise, they are not much dearer than Japanese cars, they are usually 10000kms or 1 year per service, vs Japanese cars 5000kms or 6 months service.  we paid $12648, and for the condition of the car we are getting, almost new inside, with bluetooth, parking sensors and sunroof (not that we need it) and cruise control, and only 47800kms on the clock, we think we will be able to use it for a while, so we don't worry too much about resales.  Of course, we'd like to have turbo diesel engine instead of petrol, and Sat Nav, but that will mean that we need to pay a bit more and we don't want to lift the budget further.

it's a B180, very standard, nothing fancy, A class will look better for my son as it's a bit sporty, but more expensive, and he will survive with a granny car.

my husband had a look at a few, one of them from another caryard, the dealer was selling his accountants' E class coupe, 2010 model, 77000kms on the clock, very good condition, $35K drive away...brand new is over $100K easy, German cars, lose a lot during re-sale, no one seems to want to buy them, even though they are mechanically sound, and reliable.

老奔驰换个刹车片刹车盘之类的小玩意儿动不动管你要四位数的时候你发现大部分日系只要三分之一的价格你就明白了，而且要换的东西千奇百怪，足够每一次保养轮着来，且不论故障了换件的时候报价是个什么体验

欧洲车新车头三五年是享受的时候，往后就是挨宰的时候，为什么不保值就是这原因，除非自己懂DIY

there's a recall list, not long ago, in the age. i cant find it now, but most affected ones are toyotas and hondas, and some mazdas,  we have friends who work for toyota, we often tease them about the recalls, but, a job is a job, although, a lot of them lost the jobs now.

they are ok, cheaper grade euro cars got cheaper parts, AMGs are more expensive.  all the same, if you find a car that's always serviced, low kms on the clock, well maintained, usually it's alright.  we looked at japanese  cars first, but we found a lot of first car owners don't trade them in, so if they are bit better condition, they are private sales, most previous owners are younger ones who will take them around the block a bit. the euro car owners, especially the retirees and old ladies, they don't care, they go straight trade in for the next one, and most of their cars were very well maintained and low kms...  so pick the previous owner is quite important as well. regardless what car model (apart from korean cars, I just don't like them, family history).  my mother in law's old Mazda 3 was very well maintained, very low kms on the clock, no accidents, our eldest daughter got that one now though and after 10 years, still only 65000kms on the clock... so we don't really look at which brand, but the actual condition.

we won't dare to touch a euro car with high kms on the clock, that's asking for trouble.

the mazda 3 is now over 10 years old... from MIL to my step daughter

i mean the other one talked about expensive services... but B class services are not that expensive and parts are not expensive, B class is the cheap grade euro...   not about the air bags
