What’s it about?
Well, the nobleman Bassanio, who’s only wealth lies in his lineage (the blood in his veins, as Shakespeare puts it), requests a loan from his friend Antonio (the titular Merchant of Venice) so that he can woo the wealthy heiress Portia. Unfortunately, all of Antonio’s wealth is tied up in his ventures abroad, and he has no spare cash to lend Bassanio, let alone the 3,000 Ducats he’s asked for! In order to make Bassanio happy though, Antonio goes to the moneylender, Shylock, requesting a loan of 3,000 ducats for 3 months, which Shylock agrees to – asking not for interest (or as the character styles it “thrift”) but instead for a Pound of Antonio’s Flesh, if he defaults on the loan. Antonio agrees, as his ships are due home in but two months, and even one successful venture in six will allow him to repay the loan. With the money in hand, Bassanio heads off to Belmont to woo Portia. Portia’s deceased father, however, set up a test for would-be suitors to pass before they can marry Portia – they must deduce the correct casket to open, one of three made of Gold, Silver or Lead, each inscribed with a riddle. Meantime, Bassanio’s friend Lorenzo has eloped with Shylock’s Daughter – and a further 2,000 Ducats and some gemstones as well – none of Antonio’s ships have returned in time for him to pay the loan, and an embittered Shylock is demanding his gruesome penalty…
