Healthy Travel provides health insurance cover for temporary visitors and non-residents to Australia who are ineligible for public health care (Medicare) benefits, or who are eligible but choose to be treated privately. It provides private hospital and medical cover. You also have the option to purchase Extras cover for a range of health services such as dental, optical and chiropractic.
However, this cover excludes the cost of private patient medical and hospital treatment and elective surgery. Some countries require their residents to prove that health cover is held before arriving in Australia. You can buy now to ensure that you are covered before you arrive.

Hospital Cover
You are covered for the following hospital costs:
100% cover for accommodation, theatre fees and other treatments in an agreement private hospital or any public hospital. Find an Agreement Hospital. (Accommodation Cover in a non-agreement private hospital will be limited to a maximum of $450 per day.)
100% emergency ambulance transportation up to a maximum of $1,000 per membership per calendar year.
100% of fees on surgical prosthesis items specified under the Australian Government listing.
Medical Cover
Medical fees are based on the Australian Government Schedule (MBS). Under Healthy Travel you receive:
100% cover up to the Australian Government Schedule of medical fees for inpatient hospital medical services (provided while you are in hospital).
85% of the Australian Government Schedule of medical fees for all other outpatient medical services.
Overall Maximums
A maximum of $30,000 per person per calendar year up to an overall maximum of $60,000 per family applies for hospital/medical expenses. The yearly maximum is calculated on a calendar year from 1 January to 31 December regardless of the date of joining.
What is not covered?
You need to be aware that certain exclusions apply to Healthy Travel:
Pre-existing illnesses or conditions
IVF, GIFT and any other treatments for infertility/sterility
Psychiatric and Rehabilitation programmes (unless required as the result of an accident while in Australia)
Elective Cosmetic Surgery (unless required as the result of an accident or surgical scarring while in Australia)
The Federal Government Government Rebate on Private Health Insurance is not available.
Any services provided outside of Australia
Outpatient services (hospital facility fees) when you are not admitted to the hospital
Pharmacy
Waiting periods
Immediate cover for hospital and medical benefits provided you have enrolled within two (2) weeks of your arrival in Australia, otherwise a general waiting period of two (2) months applies.
No benefits will be paid for any illness, ailment or condition shown by medical evidence to exist prior to or at the time of joining. Australian Unity may request further medical evidence in determining eligibility for benefits.
A twelve (12) month waiting period will apply to obstetrics/maternity.
How to Apply

Australian Unity will email you a letter confirming your cover.
Within two weeks of arrival in Australia or receipt of your cover confirmation email, provide copies of your passport, visa and date of arrival stamp. This can be posted (no stamp required) to:

Terms & Conditions for Healthy Travel Cover

1. Eligibility
A member may contribute to Healthy Travel if the member is a resident of an overseas country and visiting Australia on a temporary basis, a citizen of an overseas country intending to reside permanently in Australia or a citizen of Australia who is residing overseas PROVIDED THAT in all cases the member is ineligible for Medicare benefits under the Health Insurance Act 1973. Should you become eligible for full Medicare benefits you should contact us immediatly as eligibility to contribute to Healthy Travel should cease.
2. Single/Family Membership
Single membership covers the member only. Family membership covers the member and eligible dependants as defined in point 3.
3. Dependants
A family membership covers the member, spouse/de facto and their dependent children up to the age of 23 years. Children continue to be included under the family membership while they remain unmarried and continue to attend an approved full-time course of study at a school, college or university in Australia up until the age of 25 years.
4. Waiting Periods
All Hospital/Medical Treatment: two months (unless member joins prior to or within two weeks of arriving in Australia).
Childbirth/Pregnancy: 12 months
Extras Health Services: Waiting Periods for Extras.
5. Medical Benefits
Will be paid to the levels detailed in Schedule "L" of the Australian Unity Health Fund Rules. The reference document for the payment of medical benefits is the Medicare Benefits Schedule Book of fees and services. The method and guidelines to determine the amount of an eligible claim for medical benefits will be as detailed in the Medicare Benefits Schedule Book, as at the date a professional service was rendered. Benefits under Australian Unity’s Gap Cover are not available under this table.

6. Exclusions from Benefits
Pre-existing Conditions
IVF, GIFT and all infertility/sterility treatment programmes
Psychiatric & Rehabilitation programmes/services unless as a result of an accident occurring in Australia after the member was accepted for membership
Elective cosmetic surgery unless as a result of an accident occurring in Australia after the member was accepted for membership

7. Compensation from Other Sources
Australian Unity benefits are not payable where a member has a right to claim damages, compensation or benefits from any other source.

8. Extent of Benefits
Benefits are limited to the insured rate or actual amount charged, whichever is less. Conditions and benefits apply as at the date of service. Payment of benefits on Hospital cover for hospitalisation in excess of 35 days will require medical evidence certifying the need for on-going acute care in hospital to be provided to Australian Unity.
Surgical procedures listed on the Government Exclusion List may require medical certification before benefits are payable. Hospitalisation benefits are available at the insured rate for 365 days per year subject to medical certification as to the need for on-going acute care and/or until yearly maximum benefit entitlement has been paid.
9. Total Benefits
The total overall benefit payable by the Company in a calendar year will be $30,000 per person up to a maximum per family of $60,000.
10. Claims
Benefits are not payable for periods during which a membership is unfinancial nor are they payable on claims submitted more than two (2) years after date of service.

11. Liability
Australian Unity will not be liable should an application or claim form contain false or inaccurate information or where the member is unfinancial.
12. Membership Application/Renewal
The company reserves the right to decline an application for membership or to decline to renew the membership of a member.
13. Summary of Rules
This web page should be used as a guide only. The complete Australian Unity Rules (including the Rules of Australian Unity Health Benefits Fund) set out in full the terms and conditions of membership and liability under the fund. These rules are available for inspection at Australian Unity Head Office in South Melbourne.
14. Refund
A member wishing to claim a refund of contributions paid in advance must apply to the fund in writing. Any refund will be calculated from the actual date the refund application is received by Australian Unity and will attract an administration fee of no more than 15%. There are no refunds payable on memberships of 3 months or less unless the applicant was unsuccessful in obtaining an entry Visa to Australia. In this case, a copy of the letter of visa denial must also be forwarded with the cancellation request. Any refunds allowed will only be credited to the account from which the initial payment was made. |
