Family Tax Benefit Part A supplement
From 1 July 2012, parents and carers will need to have met the immunisation requirements to receive the Family Tax Benefit Part A supplement (currently $726 for each relevant child each year). There will be three age check points. The first is when the child turns one; the second is when the child turns two; and the third is when the child turns five. The first check point at one year will help make sure the child receives important early vaccinations at the medically recommended times (two, four and six months of age). The third check point will ensure the child is fully immunised before they start school.
The new arrangements will create a stronger financial incentive for parents. Over three immunisation check points, families will have a $2,100 incentive to ensure their child is fully immunised. Immunisation is also already a condition for Australian Government child care payments.
The Family Assistance Office will check with the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register on whether a child is assessed as being fully immunised (or has an approved exemption) at the end of the financial year when a family’s payments are balanced. This happens after parents or carers lodge their tax returns, if required to do so, or inform the Family Assistance Office if they are not required to lodge.
If the Family Tax Benefit Part A supplement for the relevant child(ren) is withheld because immunisation requirements have not been met, parents will have up to two years, from the end of the financial year in which the child turned one, two or five, to meet the new requirements and still get the supplement.
The Australian Government expects that these reforms will provide a stronger incentive for families to immunise their children. This will ensure that existing high coverage rates are maintained, or improved over time.
