How does the period of history help determine our identity and sense of belonging?
‘Nanberry drew closer to the fire around him.’
‘The girls’ and the women sang as they hung today’s fish up on the lines to dry in the smoke’
These quotes are common examples of Aboriginal ways passed on by generation after generation. I was told, when I was born that I was Chinese, but as I grew older and moved to AUS, I was Australian. I had to change my understanding of where I belong and who I am, believe me, it’s not easy. Nanberry had a perfect understanding of who he was, an Aboriginal boy, training to be a warrior like the men around him. But then, as a white-ghost adopts him, his past was history.
‘His world had changed.’
Later on, in a different period of history, Nanberry had changed his idea of belonging as have I when I went to a different country. He now been acknowledged to believe that he was English. He wore clothes, ate at tables and did not need to hunt. What he had believed before, vanished.
How does our connection with family help create our sense of identity and belonging?
Whenever we hear the word 'family' we immediately think of loved ones, memories and home. Nanberry had everything, a loving family and a strong sense of belonging and identity. Often Nanberry mentions his understanding of his belonging as during the beginning of the book he was from the tribe of Cadigal and throughout the novel, he is sure that he is an Englishman. The exact thing happened to Rachel, who thought that she was a convict and slave but later gets married and becomes a rich lady with a respected status. This is what a carriage driver said about her to her son.
“There ain’t a couple o’better people in the colony, nor back in England either, I’m thinkin’.”
“You must be proud”
Throughout my life, I have been very confused about what nationality I am, since I am born Chinese but have an Australian passport. I now have realised that I belong to both nationalities and belong as a Chinese and Australian person. I have a great relationship with my family which I think is essential to a happy and have a good understanding of where we belong. Andrew is Rachel’s only son and he had a great connection of brotherhood with Nanberry but later on, he finds the memory of being a brother to a native very unique in society as he says
‘What would my fellow sailors think if I had a native as a brother?’ in a jokingly way.
Andrew appeared to honour and respect his native brother even though he finds it very unique in that time of society. I find it very important to honour and respect your parents as they gave you life and they always respect and honour you as you should to them.
