272 【The Rainbow】But when he got to the Marsh, he realized how fixed everything was, how the other form of life was beyond him, and he regretted for the first time that he had succeeded to the farm. He felt a prisoner, sitting safe and easy and unadventurous. -- by D. H. Lawrence.

-- to many of us, getting to a life as a prisoner, and being safe and easy, is almost the whole point of our daily busying about..then why should he feel bad about this, now that he seemed to have achieved the point?..

。This wall display, flashing about the Flinders' dome, struck me the best as a welcoming signage to my arrival..

273 【Aron's Rod】She was in that nervous state when desire seems to evaporate the moment
fulfilment is offered. -- by D. H. Lawrence.

。 -- On the Flinders’ square, pigeons were not seen by me in flocks, but one gull sauntering alone, who looked more fascinated in the queer, sharp and patchy atmosphere, than attracted to any possible food on the vast space. The paved ground, artificially stoned and polished, is clean and neat, maybe too slippery for their tiny feet to tread on. And people these days, persuaded by their good-willed government, don’t share their junk food such as chips or meat with birds any more. I had to wonder within myself, how could they find those fleshy worms to be wildly and healthily fed as we have so much wished, since there doesn’t seem to have many greens in the town for them to decently grow. Probably I just worry too much, and so please, not to worry about others at least for the night, so long as I could comfortably throw my back onto the tidy, and humanly concrete bedding, and making myself luxuriously drunk.

274 【Aron's Rod】"It's life!  Love is life," said Jim fiercely.
"It's a vice, like drink," said Lilly.
"Eh?  A vice!" said Jim.  "May be for you, old bird."
"More so still for you," said Lilly.
"It's life.  It's life!" reiterated Jim.  "Don't you agree?"  He turned wolfishly to Clariss.
"Oh, yes--every time--" she drawled, nonchalant.
"Here, let's write it down," said Lilly.  He found a blue pencil and printed in large letters on the old creamy marble of the mantel-piece panel:--LOVE IS LIFE.
Julia suddenly rose and flung her arms asunder wildly.
"Oh, I hate love.  I hate it," she protested.
Jim watched her sardonically.
"Look at her!" he said.  "Look at Lesbia who hates love."
"No, but perhaps it is a disease.  Perhaps we are all wrong, and we can't love properly," put in Josephine.
"Have another try," said Jim,--"I know what love is.  I've thought about it.  Love is the soul's respiration."
"Let's have that down," said Lilly.
LOVE IS THE SOUL'S RESPIRATION.  He printed it on the old mantel-piece. Jim eyed the letters.
"It's right," he said.  "Quite right.  When you love, your soul breathes in.  If you don't breathe in, you suffocate."
"What about breathing out?" said Robert.  "If you don't breathe out, you asphyxiate."
"Right you are, Mock Turtle--" said Jim maliciously.
"Breathing out is a bloody revolution," said Lilly.
"You've hit the nail on the head," said Jim solemnly.
"Let's record it then," said Lilly.  And with the blue pencil heprinted:
WHEN YOU LOVE, YOUR SOUL BREATHES IN--
WHEN YOUR SOUL BREATHES OUT, IT'S A BLOODY REVOLUTION.   -- by D. H. Lawrence.

-- When passing by the Melbourne Ark Gallery, I was stunningly impressed with the artworks of human body on display, where three main points are exaggerated so lavishly for man and woman.

275 【Aron's Rod】'I knew a Russian doctor who'd been through the Russo-Japanese war, and who had gone a bit cracked.  He said he saw the Japs rush a trench.  They threw everything away and flung themselves through the Russian fire and simply dropped in masses.  But those that reached the trenches jumped in with bare hands on the Russians and tore their faces apart and bit their throats out--fairly ripped the faces off the bone.--It had sent the doctor a bit cracked.  He said the wounded were awful,--their faces torn off and their throats mangled--and dead Japs with flesh between the teeth--God knows if it's true.  But that's the impression the Japanese had made on this man. It had affected his mind really.'   -- by D. H. Lawrence.

276 【Aron's Rod】"Why, you know," Aaron turned excitedly in the bed, "they look on a man as if he was nothing but an instrument to get and rear children. If you have anything to do with a woman, she thinks it's because you want to get children by her.  And I'm damned if it is.  I want my own pleasure, or nothing: and children be damned."

"Ah, women--THEY must be loved, at any price!" said Lilly.  "And if you just don't want to love them--and tell them so--what a crime."

"A crime!" said Aaron.  "They make a criminal of you.  Them and their children be cursed.  Is my life given me for nothing but to get children, and work to bring them up?  See them all in hell first. They'd better die while they're children, if childhood's all that important."   -- by D. H. Lawrence.

。 - There must be certain goodness about the lamp that attracts my favouring attention. Of course, one can find many of good design of street lamps, but this one at Box Hill bus station, stands as if on a well-balanced scale; it is simple, slim, elegant and straight, no more, no less, posing its easy living stance in the near air. It is unlike some other ones, whose limbs have to be bended, or curved or twisted in an ugly and awkward way, to provide only a lighting service that is too common to be overly complicated.

277 【Aron's Rod】But whether woman yielded or not, he would keep the mastery of his own soul and conscience and actions.  He would never yield himself up to her judgment again.  He would hold himself forever beyond her jurisdiction. -- by D.H.Lawrence

。-- The Yarra River, with the rubbishes on the face, is what I like, as much as I like the river of Shanghai bund. Unclean, yellowish and upside down as they are and so nicknamedly called, the residents in the city admire and worship and very much depend on its constant shivering flow. And when entering the twilight towards midnight and before the dawn, it beautifies itself with the help of the colourful electric lights along the bank, off from the restless standing CROWN. The bottles and leaves will then be tinged and clothed with a glow of gold, and people, after much intake of affordable liquor, becoming intoxicated and excited, are to be happily enjoying looking at them, enjoying their beauty and their mystic originality. Each of the waste has in fact a long history, a remarkable history of being used, sucked and tortured and finally dumped by the human body. Their corpses are thrown into the water, yet can’t be buried in still, so they float and travel on, bounce in the ditch, drift on the river, and even sail over the sea, with their belly empty and hungry as much at one time, and filled and stuffed as less at another. They struggle, weeping along, arriving at this bay in Melbourne, where they decide to belong. Never mind they couldn’t be heartily rooted, never mind they couldn’t properly germinate, the little bobbing, the little swishing and romantic jerking, are sufficiently enough to thrill their soul.

278 【Aron's Rod】Two eagles in mid-air, grappling, whirling, coming to their intensification of love-oneness there in mid-air.  In mid-air the love consummation.  But all the time each lifted on its own wings: each bearing itself up on its own wings at every moment of the mid-air love consummation.  That is the splendid love-way. -- by D.H.Lawrence

。 -- At first I didn’t know why I felt good when entering this sack-shaped bridge in Melbourne. It gave me somehow a feeling, that I was being captured, lifted up from the ground, and then gently and lovingly wrapped into a soft blanket, as if about to have a safe and comfortable sleep after a day’s tired living. Well, you may simply imagine that you are entering into a sleep bag, on one of the wild and savage camping occasions in your memory. It has a shape of tunnel, but not at all like the underground traffic holes in Sydney, which are forever dim, smothered and foul, in spite of many of the man-made lights and ventilations along the way. It was only a pity the passage is too short, and the sensation may be too quickly expired to be registered properly in passengers' mind. Next time I would like to walk through it, and even consider placing a sheet in the sidetrack in the middle, and lie down and sleep, choosing a night when the traffic is loose and less irritable. For Melbourne residents, you can just set off tonight, getting one or two of your acquaintances (preferably from oursteps), setting up a little camping on the spot; and surely, you are to become not quite yourself, but one much happier, like a happy worm, wriggling and reveling in this fantastic, intestine-like shelter.

280 【Aron's Rod】Her soul seemed to breathe as a butterfly breathes, as it rests on a leaf and slowly breathes its wings.  For the first time!  For the first time her soul drew its own deep breath.  All her life, the breath had caught half-way.  And now she breathed full, deep, to the deepest extent of her being. 。We Chinese love the colour. It is gold, money, wealth, power and glory. Standing in the grand hall, I was very much gratified with a richness and thickness of a typical Chinese golden feeling, which you would likely have when visiting the brilliant palaces in China or more in Thailand. But all of this is merely an illusion, it would be gone the moment when the cheap light is removed from the air, and a real and genuine black-and-white would then chill you into a solid reality, or simply into a grandeur of coffin...

281 【Aron's Rod】When a man is married, he is not in love.  A husband is not a lover.  Lilly told me that: and I know it's true now.  Lilly told me that a husband cannot be a lover, and a lover cannot be a husband.  And that women will only have lovers now, and never a husband.  Well, I am a husband, if I am anything. And I shall never be a lover again, not while I live.  No, not to anybody.  I haven't it in me.  I'm a husband, and so it is finished with me as a lover.  I can't be a lover any more, just as I can't be aged twenty any more.  I am a man now, not an adolescent.  And to my sorrow I am a husband to a woman who wants a lover: always a lover. But all women want lovers.  And I can't be it any more.  I don't want to.  I have finished that.  Finished for ever: unless I become senile.  -- by D. H. Lawrence

'If I make a donation, your dreams will come true.' I said to the painter.

He raised his head, looked startled at me, and slowly, he laughed a mocking laughter and said: 'Yes, yes, my dreams will come true, ha ha, and yours too.'

He then relapsed and continued his work.

I watched him painting quietly for a while, before interrupting him again: ‘Tipping is not sexy, it is sexily silly.’

‘You are right.’ He replied quick and dry, without looking at me as attentively before.

I felt short at his short response, and decided to piss me off. I dropped one dollar, a coin which is hard and heavy and sexy, onto his coins sheet at about his sprawling feet, and left.

282 【Coming up for air】Of course, the basic trouble with people like us, I said to myself, is that we all imagine we've got something to lose.  To begin with, nine-tenths of the people in Ellesmere Road are under the impression that they own their houses. -- by George Orwell

墨尔本box Hill Gardens:

Apart from the birds chirping and flitting in the shades of trees, I saw a couple of Chinese elders, who must be the grandparents of a baby in a trolley. They were the only people in the garden I came across, at the time I was visiting Box Hill Gardens. The sun was big in the sky, with only a few thin clouds loitering in the blue, very lonely, as if they had suddenly become homeless now the triumphant sun at its fullest height. The sun rays, with little obstruction on their way, streamed down to the earth, seriously warming up the people, or rather, all the earthly creatures on the ends of its course. But apparently, the warmth was too much, passed its threshold and soon turning to a heat that threatened to hurt the tender skin of the baby. I could see a lot of little uneasy negotiations and gestures exchanging between the couple, who looked rather solitary in the almost empty garden, and who would pause their steps, bow their heads, checking the baby, and walk again for a few steps, and then pause again, bow their heads and checking again, such repeatedly for a number of rounds, until a final decision seemed to have been reached between them, that an umbrella was needed to shade the baby, and that the grandpa should walk in the very front of the toddler to the best effect of its purpose… The umbrella was beautiful, stripped red and blue, sharp and gleaming under the sun, sheltering three hearts, which now settled peacefully at last. I watched them slowly disappearing from my sight, quietly, with a queer and strange and dreamy silence, without a sound being heard from the trolley and two people and the toddler, though they were all moving in their motion on the path -- it was just one of those moments in a living day …

283 【Coming up for air】It's all bunk to imagine, as some people do, that a woman looks on a fat man as just a joke.  The truth is that a woman doesn't look on ANY man as a joke if he can kid her that he's in love with her. -- by George Orwell

I sat at the corner of the aluminium bench at Box Hill bus station – you can catch a partial of me and my blue bag in the photo. This young girl, chattering animatedly with a boy of her age, suddenly lifted her leg and thrust her right foot onto a spot on the bench, which was only some centimetres away from my seating, close enough to make me feel painfully uneasy. Although she seemed to have done this quite naturally, without any suggestion that she was aware of her utmost impudence for intruding my sensitive private distance, my whole body seemed to have been transfixed motionless, in a severe consciousness that with any measure of movement, my leg would just run into a dangerous clash with her bare, dirty foot.  However, in the end, my intensive curiosity won the battle. I managed to play skillfully my mobile with only my free hands, taking a couple of photos in a highly stealthy manner, while all the time constrained the rest of my body in the tight and dismal confinement.

284 【Coming up for air】The past is a curious thing.  It's with you all the time.  I suppose an hour never passes without your thinking of things that happened ten or twenty years ago, and yet most of the time it's got no reality, it's just a set of facts that you've learned, like a lot of stuff in a history book.  Then some chance sight or sound or smell, especially smell, sets you going, and the past doesn't merely come back to you, you're actually IN the past.  -- by George Orwell

285 【Coming up for air】Most of the time my separate existence looks pretty important to me, I feel that there's life in the old dog yet and plenty of good times ahead, and the notion of myself as a kind of tame dairy-cow for a lot of women and kids to chase up and down doesn't appeal to me.  -- by George Orwell

Kingsway, Glen Waverley:

It was a pity that I was almost running out of my mobile battery when I arrived in Glen Waverley, and couldn’t take as many photos as I had wished.  This street in the picture is one side of Kingsway, where Chinese restaurants and shops almost make up more than half of the shops. I rather think it was only recently developed, although I can’t tell you how many years back is said to be recent, and in that you have your own judgement. Having firstly visited Box Hill and obtained a strong impression of China-dynamics in my mind, I didn’t expect Glen Waverley to be anywhere close to Box Hill in our beloved Chinese way. So when I walked to this section of Kingsway nearby the library, and was welcomed by its rich Chinese element in the surroundings, I was very much surprised. The restaurants and shops are not situated along a main traffic like that in Box Hill, they are at a quiet two-way street, in the middle of which leaves out plenty parking space.  With a garden-like design, more walking space and less foul traffic, the diners as well as patrons shall be able to make their leisure time more peaceful and enjoyable. Some of the resting benches, as I have noticed, are remarkable, they have a special design that fits a sitting-up back chair onto one end of the bench - the first type I have ever seen. Well, it is possible there is similar design in Box Hill as well, but since I can’t recall, it must be unimpressive and therefore should be ignored in my collection. In Sydney, there is definitely not any this special and humanized design, as I can shamelessly and boldly assure you. There are also many western restaurants present in Kingsway, but the atmosphere is quite Asian, or rather quite Chinese from my personal perspective; and furthermore, I may dare say  this spot has a comfort and peace and relaxation that Box Hill has yet to compete. I also noticed, like Box Hill, there is a “China Bar”, which is quite outstanding among the rows of shops. Being somehow a bar-allergic person, I was admittedly very aroused by the name. However, when I peeped into the shop with my keen eyes looking for any signs of beer and liquor, and of course the lovely drinkers, who are mostly upon the scene red-faced and half sleeping and half dreaming, I was disappointed by seeing only the conventional hungry eaters of conventional Chinese noodle-rice-meat-fries. But I did see some GuiLao lounging directly outside the crowded shop, in both Box Hill and Glen Waverley. I wondered whether they were attracted by the shop name, or by the food, or simply by its jostling crowd. Will it be changed to a bar at late night and reflect a true bar story as implied by its name? I am not very sure, but I very much doubt it, and I don't have any extra time to prove it by this short visit, unless some of you can help with the query, which I swear you are more unlikely than not to do so. In Kingsway, the most impressive – yes, most impressive -- to me was actually the birds, which seemed to have clutched all together into one or two trees, singing or, more precisely and literally speaking, shouting and bellowing violently and hysterically at the time when the dusk fell upon the place. The tree was only medium-sized, so it was very strange to me, for which I almost felt annoyed and angry, that I couldn’t even make out any of them among the low and loose leaves, even if their voices were majestically charging the entire air, drowning the subdued, based, pathetic, monotonous, buzzing and murmuring human sound on the ground– well, not such sound of me, I didn’t say a single word, nor sing any music, nor drink any liquid in this place, I have kept my mouth tightly shut during all the time of my visit. Next time when I visit there again, I am bound to leave a sound, a sound even lounder than the crazy birds. I hope they will still live there then, and have not yet migratred to Sydney....

286 【Coming up for air】We don't do the things we want to do.  It isn't because we're always working.  Even a farm-hand or a Jew tailor isn't always working.  It's because there's some devil in us that drives us to and fro on everlasting idiocies.  There's time for everything except the things worth doing.  Think of something you really care about.  Then add hour to hour and calculate the fraction of your life that you've actually spent in doing it.  And then calculate the time you've spent on things like shaving, riding to and fro on buses, waiting in railway, junctions, swapping dirty stories, and reading the newspapers. -- by George Orwell

I am ugly and even uglier in the distorting glass. I can be compressed to be shorter and broader. I can also be stretched to be longer and thinner. The distortion is enormous, as my soul and mind can sometimes be. Can I be really my true self, in both my blood and spirit? Yes, I can, when the glass is replaced by your eye pupils, and when my clothes are replaced by your glances and scratches, so I will be naked and truly myself in your appropriation. But do not touch my heart, please leave it alone and unscathed, as it is sacred as the core of my being. It belongs to nobody but me. Don’t ask me why. It doesn’t belong to anybody but me. Please don’t question with your question. You can have everything else, the legs, the face, the blood, the mind, everything but the heart. Because, if you take it, the sun will be blotted and turn eclipse, the moon will drop and collide with earth, the sky will split and tears will pour from the crack, the whole universe will weep, weep, weep, till there is no tears left for weep. Then your hand will burn, turning to ashes; my heart will fall and cry and die, turning to a fossil forever dry …

287 【Coming up for air】And what are the realities of modern life?  Well, the chief one is an everlasting, frantic struggle to sell things.  With most people it takes the form of selling themselves--that's to say, getting a job and keeping it.  -- by George Orwell

Box Hill  - This man must be wondering how the hell this Hill has become a Box full of Asians. In what languages are they chattering so incessantly, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, or Indonesian? They seem to be forever rotating their tongues, either uttering some strange sounds, or devouring large bowl of things. I understand talking and eating are closely working up by very much the same device, and apparently they are very good at using it. For me, I rarely talk more than necessarily, although oftentimes I eat their food. Not that I so much like their food, I just don’t feel right spending my lifetime doing that sort of thing. They all look the same, taste the same, sound the same, yet they all look happy and content and unworried; their little smiles more frequently hanging round the faces than any other human species. I just can’t understand a damn bit of their things.

291 【The Waves】He approaches. He makes towards me. This is the most exciting moment I have ever known. I flutter. I ripple. I stream like a plant in the river, flowing this way, flowing that way, but rooted, so that he may come to me. "Come," I say, "come." Pale, with dark hair, the one who is coming is melancholy, romantic. And I am arch and fluent and capricious; for he is melancholy, he is romantic. He is here; he stands at my side. -- by   Virginia Woolf

292 【The Waves】The sun had now sunk lower in the sky. The islands of cloud had gained in density and drew themselves across the sun so that the rocks went suddenly black, and the trembling sea holly lost its blue and turned silver, and shadows were blown like grey cloths over the sea.  -- by   Virginia Woolf
