I have to disagree!
In any Australian universities, the minimum level of employment that a fresh PhD graduate can be appointed at is Academic Level A Step 6. The salaries are very similar between different universities. For example, at the University of Sydney, the minimum salary for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow is $76,343 per year plus 17% superannuation. See http://sydney.edu.au/sydneypeopl ... ff_annual_rates.pdf for details.
The postdoctoral research fellows earns about 50% less in North America.
General speaking, research fellows' positions are usually contract-only.
This discussion has perhaps missed the point a little bit. The purpose for a PhD graduate to work as a postdoctoral research fellow for a couple of years is to develop a good research track record so that he or she can obtain a permanent faculty position later, not for the $76K income.
The starting salary of a new PhD graduate in industry can vary significantly. For example, you can easily get $100K+ if you work in the mineral processing area.
