Grant of Australian Citizenship Appointment Checklist
Please use this checklist to ensure that your application is complete.
PART 1 - FORMS & CHARGES
If you…
Then…
have lodged your application electronically prior to attending your interview, you must:
q complete Form 1195 - Proof of identity for electronic lodgement of Australian Citizenship application
Then go to PART 2 – DOCUMENTS.
have lodged your application by mail go to PART 2 - DOCUMENTS.
are lodging your application at time of interview prior to attending your interview, you must:
q Read Form 1027i - How to apply for grant of Australian Citizenship
q Complete Form 124 - Application for Grant of Australian Citizenship
q Bring the application charge of $120. Note: Concession rates are available, please refer to page 1 and 3 of Form 1027i - How to apply for grant of Australian Citizenship for further details. Please pay by credit card, eftpos, money order or bank cheque.
- Please do not pay by cash or personal cheque
- Bank cheques and Money Orders must be made out to “DIMA”
- If necessary, you can split payments across different cards or between cheque and credit card
Then go to PART 2 – DOCUMENTS.
PART 2 – DOCUMENTS
All documents must be originals, photocopies or certified copies are not acceptable. Any document not in English must be accompanied by a translation completed by a National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) accredited translator. Visit the NAATI website - www.naati.com.au - for more information or telephone 1300 655 080 to arrange document translations
For each applicant bring:
q a passport sized colour photograph that is no more than 6 months old, endorsed on the back by an Australian citizen (as per instructions on page 8 of Form 124, or page 1 of Form 1195). Note: Children under the age of 16 do not need to provide a photograph.
q a full birth certificate
q a current passport or travel document, and any old passports or travel documents that are in your possession
q evidence of your permanent residence (in most circumstances this is the visa in your passport)
If… Then you must bring original document(s) as evidence…
you have changed your name q of any changes (example: marriage certificate, deed poll)
you are a British subject who arrived in Australia before 1 January 1975 and you do not have evidence of your entry into Australia q that you were resident in Australia before 01/01/1975 (example: employment records, tax returns, school records)

you have served in the permanent defence forces of Australia for at least 3 months q from the Australian Defence Force, either a letter or discharge papers
a child under the age of 16 is included in your application for citizenship q of the child's permanent residence (example: their passport), and
q the child's full birth certificate showing parents names, and
q if you have been granted custody and/or guardianship of the child, bring the relevant court orders
Note: Children do not need to provide photographs
your adopted child under the age of 16 is included in your application for citizenship q original adoption papers
you are applying on the basis of being a spouse of an Australian Citizen q of your spouse’s Australian citizenship (example: Birth Certificate or Citizenship Certificate), and
q your Marriage Certificate
New Zealand citizens:
q 16 years and over, who do not hold a permanent residence visa need to bring a statement from the New Zealand Ministry of Justice that they do not have a criminal record in New Zealand, or a copy of their criminal record. Details of how to obtain this are available from the Ministry on their web site – http://www.courts.govt.nz/privacy
q may need to provide a certificate issued by Centrelink stating that you were residing in Australia on a particular date (see page 2 of Form 1027i)
At interview most clients will be expected to know and understand the following:
Responsibilities - As an Australian citizen, you are required to:
q obey the laws and fulfil your duties as an Australian citizen;
q enrol on the Electoral Register and vote at Federal, State, Territory and local government elections and referendums;
q serve on a jury, if called on, and
q defend Australia, should the need arise.
Privileges – As an Australian citizen, you will benefit from the entitlement, under Australian law, to the same rights as all Australian citizens:
q the right as a voter to help elect Australia’s governments;
q the right to apply for public office or to nominate for election to parliament
q the right to apply for an Australian passport and to leave and re-enter Australia without applying for a resident return visa;
q the right to seek protection from Australian diplomatic representatives while overseas;
q eligibility to apply to enlist in the defence forces and for government jobs for which Australian citizenship is required; and
q the right to register any child under 25 years of age, born to you overseas as an Australian citizen by descent.
