ZT FROM THE AGE( 20/08/2005)
Liveability: it's a slippery concept. One man's crema is another man's lawn. One woman's playgroup is another's art exhibition. According to The Age's study, conducted by Tract Consultants and ACIL Tasman, South Yarra topped the 314 suburbs ranked, with East Melbourne, Hawthorn East, Clifton Hill and Armadale making up the top five.
How accurately the 14 measured criteria can calibrate liveability is, of course, open to debate. They included good access to tram, train and bus services, nearby schools, the level of crime, culture, traffic congestion and shops. The lower ranking suburbs were mostly on Melbourne's outer-suburban fringe, and scored especially poorly on public transport. They included, in no particular order, Hallam, Sydenham, Lysterfield, Kilsyth South, Cranbourne North and Bayswater North. |
