Yates estimated that the overall tax expenditures on housing are around $53 billion per year, but that the vast majority of this – $45 billion – flowed to existing homeowners as imputed subsidies. A further $5 billion was provided to rental housing investors, while renters were subsidised by only $3.2 billion (Yates 2010: 87)
