Jason's final interview
Did you ever expect to make it this far?
Deep down I had faith I could make it this far, but being up against such strong talented designers and the ever-increasing workload constantly challenged that.
Who did you think was going to win?
It could have been anyone's.
Has your experience on the show changed the way you look at design?
I think being on the show week after week really helped mould my sense of design and it was great learning ideas from the other designers, which I may not have once thought about.
What were the best and worst parts of being on the show?
The best part of the show was working and spending time with the most amazing people that the producers personally hand-picked. Everyone from production, film crew, designers, tradies to homeowners were such good-hearted talented people. The worst part was having to say goodbye to them all. And I must admit the three hours sleep we had most nights sucked big-time.
If you become the winner of homeMADE, what are you going to do with the prize money?
Wow! If I became the winner I guess I would put part it towards a deposit for an apartment that I could renovate (in five days, of course). I would give some to Leonie for being such a huge help to me every week. And I would keep some aside to start up my new interior design business.
Will you keep in touch with anyone from the show?
Are you kidding? We all love each other so much it is crazy. People that see us hanging out together will say "Oh my God ! What losers. Don't they have any other friends?!" Seriously, we all go to each other's houses each week to watch the show to support the people getting eliminated.
Which of your makeovers was your favourite?
Week eight.
What was it like working with the other designers?
It was great working with the designers, getting to know all their quirks and funny personalities. They're all just such a unique bunch of wonderful people. Unfortunately I didn't get to work with Stacey or Matthew [Simpson] from Adelaide. I love what they do and would have loved to work alongside them. But I have to say, overall I loved working with Leonie the most.
Did the deadlines impinge on your creativity?
I usually like to follow my intuition and go with my first thought so having a short deadline didn't affect the overall feel I was going for. However, in saying that there are certain furniture items that weren't available due to the time restriction and I think the rooms would have looked a lot more polished had we had more time.
Did it become easier as the competition progressed?
Once there were fewer designers it allowed a more cohesive look throughout the whole house. However it deprived us of so much more sleep because we had to sit up for hours coming up with ideas for the extra rooms.
If you could do it again would you do it differently?
I would have thrown in an extra couple of singlets.
What's the future hold?
I am working on my new single called 'Walk Like a Designer' and a spin-off of the '90s TV show Designing Women called Designing Men. Gotcha! No, seriously; I have just registered my own interior design company called Jason Sullivan Design (check out www.jasonsullivandesign.com, coming soon) and hope to work on great projects here and eventually overseas. A real dream one day is to own and design a cool boutique hotel. |
