Discuss the views for and against children playing computer games
Computer games are programs on a computer designed for entertainment. It is in debate whether children should be allowed to play these games. This piece of writing will discuss the negatives and positives of these games.
On the positive side computer games are fun. Without these games children would be bored and will provoke fits in children who have already experienced these games. Imagine what the world would be like if unhappy and despairing children were everywhere. There is no safe place from them. An atmosphere of dissatisfaction lingers in the air. This is one of the many arguments that support the positive side.
In addition, some games develop life skills. For example Starcraft is a Real Time Strategy game and other games develop reflex skills which is essential in the situation of a fire. Sandbox type games develop creative and critical thinking which is needed for problem solving in the real world. Role playing games develop leadership and decision-making skills. Therefore games support life skills in children which are essential for future problem solving.
Although many parents think gaming interferes with learning, if controlled gaming has positive effects on both health and learning. Gaming can reduce stress levels built up from homework. Stress can indirectly cause obesity, smoking, malnutrition, social withdrawal. It can also cause headaches, fatigue, sleep problems, under-functioning mind, muscle tension or pain, upset stomach, severe depression, and increase chances of heart problems. Education games provide a fun, stress-free way to learn. Fun helps language skills to develop and mature. This is another reason on the affirmative side
Furthermore, games develop social skills. Thanks to games people from all over the world can talk to each other. For example in Clash of Clans people are permitted to talk to their friends and meet new people. Thus a social improvement can be derived from games that are played by children.
On the other hand computer games are addictive. Addiction has now been officially listed as a mental illness. Addiction means games are breaking up the cycle of sleep and meals. Imagine that!
To add to the above gaming results in inactiveness. Did you know that Australia is one of the most obese countries in the world? To remove this negative record we must encourage people to sport more. This means reducing gaming time and using it as sport time. So, instead of clumsily fiddling with the controller precious children will run on the track or roll in the grass.
In conclusion children SHOULD be allowed to play computer games. However their gaming time needs to be restricted to an appropriate level such as 7 hours per week so it does not impede education and allow for exercise. |
