Don’t take the law into your own hands…
Recreational fishers are advised not to take the law into their own hands when it comes to suspected illegal fishing.
Recent incidents have highlighted that some people think it is ok to interfere with other fishers catch. Do not engage with people you suspect of fishing illegally. Contact the Fishers Watch phone line and report it. Provide as much detail as possible and leave a contact number.
NSW DPI Fisheries Officers interact with people who are fishing illegally every day. We are highly trained, with advanced conflict resolution and communication skills. We have specific powers to enable us to do our job safely.
It is illegal to impersonate a fisheries officer, even if you believe you are doing the right thing. Heavy penalties apply, including imprisonment.
Taking the law into your own hands could also expose a person to personal liability for assault, intimidation, theft or other criminal offences.
If you have concerns about another fishers’ safety, call your local Police, or in the event of an emergency call 000.
To report suspected illegal fishing activity, call 1800 043 536 or report it online at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/compliance/report-illegal-activity |
