182 【The importance of Living】The mature Chinese is always a person who refuses to think too hard or to believe in any single idea or faith or school of philosphy whole-heartedly. When a friend of Confucius told him that he always thought three times before he acted, Confucius wittily replied, 'To think twice is quite enough.' -- By Lin Yutan

-- 一个成熟的中国人,不较真?不钻牛角尖?

下图:这种树,皮薄,但有很多层,要是女朋友的脸皮也是这样的话,该多好,省钱是肯定的,但可能不会省力。。The thinnest and slenderest bark I have ever seen – if a girl’s skin can grow like that, being of multiple and strippable layers, she is bound to save money, notwithstanding the skinning task she has to surely labor through.。

183 【The importance of Living】When a Chinese drinks a mouthful of good soup, he gives a hearty smack. Of course, that would be bad table manners in the West. On the other hand, I strongly suspect that Western table manners, compelling us to sip our soup noiselessly and eat our food quietly with the least expression of enjoyment, are the true reason for the arrested development of the art of cuisine. Why do the Westerners talk so softly and look so miserable and decent and respectable at their meals?.. What shame is there in enjoying one's food, what shame in having a normal, healthy appetite? No, the Chinese are different. They have bad table manners, but great enjoyment of a feast. -- By Lin Yutan

-- 中国人好吃,大声砸吧着,叫唤着吃,终于吃出了艺术。。

187【Anna Karenina】And Levin saw a new trait in this woman, who attracted him so extraordinarily. Besides wit, grace, and beauty, she had truth. She had no wish to hide from him all the bitterness of her position. As she said that she sighed, and her face suddenly taking a hard expression, looked as it were turned to stone. With that expression on her face she was more beautiful than ever; but the expression was new; it was utterly unlike that expression, radiant with happiness and creating happiness, which had been caught by the painter in her portrait. -- By Leo Tolstory Translated by C. 188 【The importance of Living】And as the English think with their skin, so the Chinese think with their profound intestines... We Chinese know that we do think with our intestines; scholars are said to have 'a bellyful of ideas,' or 'a bellyful of sorrow,' or ' of anger,' or 'remorse', or 'chagrin,' or 'longing.' In all Petersburg there was not a human being to whom he could express what he was feeling, who would feel for him, not as a high official, not as a member of society, but simply as a suffering man; indeed he had not such a one in the whole world. -- By Leo Tolstory Translated by C. 190【Anna Karenina】She tried to fling herself below the wheels of the first carriage as it reached her; but the red bag which she tried to drop out of her hand delayed her, and she was too late; she missed the moment. She had to wait for the next carriage. A feeling such as she had known when about to take the first plunge in bathing came upon her, and she crossed herself. That familiar gesture brought back into her soul a whole series of girlish and childish memories, and suddenly the darkness that had covered everything for her was torn apart, and life rose up before her for an instant with all its bright past joys. But she did not take her eyes from the wheels of the second carriage. And exactly at the moment when the space between the wheels came opposite her, she dropped the red bag, and drawing her head back into her shoulders, fell on her hands under the carriage, and lightly, as though she would rise again at once, dropped on to her knees. And at the same instant she was terror-stricken at what she was doing. "Where am I? What am I doing? What for?" She tried to get up, to drop backwards; but something huge and merciless struck her on the head and rolled her on her back. "Lord, forgive me all!" she said, feeling it impossible to struggle. A peasant muttering something was working at the iron above her. And the light by which she had read the book filled with troubles, falsehoods, sorrow, and evil, flared up more brightly than ever before, lighted up for her all that had been in darkness, flickered, began to grow dim, and was quenched forever. -- By Leo Tolstory Translated by C. Garnett

198【Anna Karenina】"My love keeps growing more passionate and egoistic, while his is waning and waning, and that's why we're drifting apart." She went on musing. "And there's no help for it. He is everything for me, and I want him more and more to give himself up to me entirely. And he wants more and more to get away from me. We walked to meet each other up to the time of our love, and then we have been irresistibly drifting in different directions. And there's no altering that. He tells me I'm insanely jealous, and I have told myself that I am insanely jealous; but it's not true. I'm not jealous, but I'm unsatisfied. But…" she opened her lips, and shifted her place in the carriage in the excitement, aroused by the thought that suddenly struck her. "If I could be anything but a mistress, passionately caring for nothing but his caresses; but I can't and I don't care to be anything else. And by that desire I rouse aversion in him, and he rouses fury in me, and it cannot be different. Don't I know that he wouldn't deceive me, that he has no schemes about Princess Sorokina, that he's not in love with Kitty, that he won't desert me! I know all that, but it makes it no better for me. If without loving me, from duty he'll be good and kind to me, without what I want, that's a thousand times worse than unkindness! That's—hell! And that's just how it is. For a long while now he hasn't loved me. And where love ends, hate begins. I don't know these streets at all. Hills it seems, and still houses, and houses …. And in the houses always people and people…. How many of them, no end, and all hating each other! Come, let me try and think what I want, to make me happy. -- By Leo Tolstory Translated by C. Garnett

204 【Little Women】
"I am glad of that!" exclaimed Meg.  "I should think every young man would want to go (to war), though it is hard for the mothers and sisters who stay at home," she added sorrowfully.

"I have neither, and very few friends to care whether I live or die," said Mr. Brooke rather bitterly as he absently put the dead rose in the hole he had made and covered it up, like a little grave. -- by Louisa May Alcott

-- 看到一个类似于‘黛玉葬花’的例子,不过这是一个男孩(从下面两段看他同黛玉可能有点像--我没看过红楼梦)。

Mr. Brooke was a grave, silent young man, with handsome brown eyes and a pleasant voice.  Meg liked his quiet manners and considered him a walking encyclopedia of useful knowledge.  He never talked to her much, but he looked at her a good deal, and she felt sure that he did not regard her with aversion.

Lying on the grass at the feet of the two young ladies, Mr.Brooke obediently began the story, with the handsome brown eyes steadily fixed upon the sunshiny river.
