Giant pumpkin bid nipped in the bud by Bream Creek Show cancellation

Every year at the Bream Creek Show crowds gather in awe as record-breaking monster vegetables are weighed in.

One of Tasmania's favourite country events, the show would have been held last Saturday but was cancelled due to the COVID-19 crisis.

They don’t want to feel that they spent anything in vain — time, money, anything. However, even if they know deep inside that their approach is wrong, they still have trouble abandoning it.

'We were told we were fine'

Cathy Kleim-Meulman and her husband Bill were on board the Ovation of the Seas for a short cruise to New Zealand.

"We were very excited because we enjoy cruising and we've been to New Zealand before," she told 7.30.

Their temperature was checked when they boarded the vessel at the start of the cruise.

The ship turned around when New Zealand closed its borders.

It did not stop at any foreign port after leaving Sydney.

"We went into the theatre at night and we all watched shows … life went on normally on the cruise ship," Ms Kleim-Meulman said.

"So, yes, we were sort of not in a realistic world on the cruise ship. And then we were told we were fine when we got off."

When they arrived back in Sydney on Wednesday, March 18 they were surprised to find no health checks at the port.

"We were all anxious, we didn't know what was going to happen," Ms Kleim-Meulman said.

"We didn't actually know whether we could get off in Sydney.

"We just hopped off and went straight home. And that's what happened."

But four days after they arrived, passengers began receiving emails and calls from NSW Health officials on the morning of Saturday, March 22 advising them they urgently needed to self-quarantine.

In the four days since they disembarked the vessel, Ms Kleim-Meulman and her husband, along with almost 3,000 other passengers, had been out in the community.

"It sort of hit us pretty hard when we realised that we could have actually been spreading something that we didn't mean to," Ms Kleim-Meulman said.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson Are Feeling Better, Thank God

Over the weekend, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson further alleviated concerns about their coronavirus diagnoses with two excellent social media posts: Wilson did a very long and amusing rap, while Hanks gave an update about how they’re on the health rebound. “Two weeks after our first symptoms and we feel better,” he wrote, encouraging everyone to keep social distancing. “This, too, shall pass. We can figure this out.” This update comes after numerous days of silence from the couple, who last reported on March 17 that their symptoms were somewhat improving, although they still felt generally sick. “No fever but the blahs,” Hanks explained at the time. “Folding the laundry and doing the dishes leads to a nap on the couch. Bad news: my wife has won six straight hands of Gin Rummy and leads by 201 points.” And, in an cruel twist of fate, noted typewriter superfan Hanks added this bit of trivia with a photo: “I travelled here with a typewriter, one I used to love.” Zoom in on the company name.

Hanks and Wilson had previously returned to their rental home in Australia last week to continue their self-quarantine. The couple announced their coronavirus diagnosis on March 11, testing positive after feeling under the weather. To quell concerns, Hanks tweeted to assure fans that he and Wilson were receiving dedicated treatment from doctors Down Under. Hanks initially traveled to the continent to prepare for his role in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Elvis Presley biopic. He seems to be embracing the Aussie lifestyle during his isolated stay, sharing a picture of toast slathered in (too much?) Vegemite and a cute ‘roo. That’s certainly one way to ride out the virus.

WHO says young people also at risk from COVID-19

The World Health Organization (WHO) is warning young people all over the world that they are also at risk from COVID-19. The WHO said young people are not exempt from catching the coronavirus. Many young people mistakenly believe they will not catch the virus because of their age. They think it is a disease that only older people catch. The WHO said the truth is that young people are catching the coronavirus and becoming ill or dying from it. It added that young people are also spreading the disease to their parents, grandparents and other people. The White House also urged young adults to follow advice and to avoid gathering in large groups to help prevent the spread of the virus.

The Director-General of the WHO said: "Today, I have a message for young people: You are not invincible." He added: "This coronavirus could put you in hospital for weeks, or even kill you. Even if you don't get sick, the choices you make about where you go could be the difference between life and death for someone else." The WHO said: "A significant proportion of patients treated in hospital for COVID-19 around the world are aged under 50." New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said many young people are not following the state's social-distancing rules. He told young people that: "This is a public health issue and you cannot be endangering other peoples' health."

NSW Government grilled over handling of coronavirus issues on Ruby Princess — full press conference

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant have been grilled about the state's handling of the Ruby Princess' arrival in Sydney.

Thousands of passengers were allowed to disembark from the cruise ship last week despite several people being tested for coronavirus.

Here's what they said at today's press conference:

Reporter: Premier, it seems that the Ruby Princess issue has been a significant source [of coronavirus cases]. Is Border Force to blame for this?

Premier: Every single agency needs to take responsibility for our borders. Whether it's a ship at a port, whether it's a plane load of people coming in from overseas. We're still having thousands of people coming in on planes every single day.

The two extremes of our coronavirus response explain why Morrison and the premiers don't always agree

As the latest round of social directives sinks in and Australians tussle with the (in most cases rhetorical) question of why they can only invite three people to their wedding but nine to their squat challenge in the park, the better question to ask is a broader one.

Why does public advice seem to disagree with itself? Why are federal and state governments saying different things?

The messages are confusing. But the reasons for the differences are pretty simple.

In politics, it's always important to remember who's talking, and what skin they have in the game. What are their responsibilities and their risks?

In last night's National Cabinet meeting, as has been happening for some time now, the Victorian Premier pushed for a full lockdown like Britain's. This is an approach that is resisted by the Federal Government.

Here's why. State governments run hospitals. State health ministers and premiers are the political figures with the most scar tissue from hospital disasters. So anything a state leader can do to "flatten the curve" is not only in the interest of public health, it's also in the interest of their own personal political health.

What we can learn from the countries winning the coronavirus fight

See how coronavirus is spreading around the world — and what lessons we can take from the countries beating the virus.

Just two weeks ago coronavirus was an issue at the edges of the Australian consciousness. Now the globe is in crisis and the country is shell-shocked.

Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic has now reached more than 400,000 known cases, spread to 169 countries, and caused almost 19,000 deaths.

Just like in this chart, there’s a lot going on, and it’s very hard to understand what it all means. Well, we’re here to help.

By pulling this chart apart and then helping you put it back together, this story aims to help you understand:

• how quickly coronavirus is spreading in different countries;
• where Australia fits into the global picture;
• what we can learn from countries that appear to have curbed the rise of COVID-19; and
• what you can do to help keep Australians safe.

But first, one concept that’s vitally important to understanding a pandemic is exponential growth. This is a pattern viruses tend to initially follow, due to the way they’re spread.

The result is that what might seem like a small difference in the rate of growth can actually have enormous impacts on how many people are infected overall.

exponential:Exponential means growing or increasing very rapidly.

当n是一个正整数,aⁿ表示n个a连乘。当n=0时,aⁿ=1。

Jacinda Ardern,

Coronavirus: Clarity is the quality that makes Jacinda Ardern so effective in a crisis

While Australians spent this morning wondering exactly how long they were allowed to be at the hairdresser, New Zealand quietly went into full lockdown.

The entire population, minus a handful of essential workers, is now in self-isolation for four weeks under strict rules imposed by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

“It won’t always be perfect, but the principle of what we are doing is the right one,” she told her people yesterday.

“Success won’t be instant. The benefit of what we do today won’t be felt for many days to come.

“Expect our numbers to keep rising, because they will. In fact, modelling suggests we could have several thousand cases before we see the measures we’re taking today having an impact. But over time, we will see change if we all stick to the rules.

“You may not be at work, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have a job. Your job is to save lives, and you can do that by staying home and breaking the chain.

“Finally, if you have any questions about what you can or can’t do, and you’re looking for answers, apply a single principle. Act like you have COVID-19. Every move you make could be a risk to someone else. That is how we must all collectively think now.

“Remember to be calm, be kind, stay at home.”
