Hi Parents,
I am pleasantly surprised to see the profound interest in my personal background and classes at Scholarly. I find these questions rather humorous and honestly, I’m a bit puzzled as to why so many parents are coming out of their way to discuss what would otherwise be quite an ordinary tutor.
As someone who has always handled things head-on, I’d like to clarify a couple of things.
Many of the things listed above are correct.
1. Indeed, we have problems that I am quite aware of and we are nowhere near perfect. Nonetheless, we are trying our best to improve and rectify these issues as time goes by. Parents who have been with us from the start know this very well :).
2. We are DEFINITELY NOT for everyone. We make this quite clear in almost all our webinars and promotional materials. For prospective parents reading this, we require immense effort from both parents and students compared to other coaching colleges.
3. Most of the things mentioned above in regards to work ethic and the 6am club are COMPLETELY true. I initiated a VOLUNTARY 6am club after receiving many queries from parents in regards to a lack of time. I took the initiative to introduce kids to my normal routine which starts quite early to allow them enough time to complete required work with a fresh mind. Some parents like it. Others such as the ones above, don’t. As Steve Jobs said, ‘You can only please some of the people, some of the time.’
4. I have always been fascinated by those who become so famous that they receive nicknames. Although I cannot read, nor write Chinese, I have been told by fellow parents of our nickname. Perhaps I do not understand the cultural context of the term ‘Maotan Factory (Google Translate),’ but is hard work necessarily a bad thing? Weren’t all great countries built on the backbone of hard work? All great leaders? I might be young and naive, but I was always taught to work hard and it has been the singular vehicle that has allowed me to fill in the gaps of talent.
5. I am not the brightest. Actually, I am probably quite far from the brightest which is why I learnt at a young age to be resilient and resourceful with my time and energy. I only had the same amount of hours as everyone else. I only had the same brain (if not, less than the brain) of others. Ironically, parents think that our courses are developed solely for the purpose of teaching the brightest kids. You are not wrong, but you are not right either. Our courses are suitable for all kids who have COMMITTED PARENTS.
6. Attack my intelligence? Fair enough. Attack my integrity? We have an issue.
Let me make this very clear. I have NEVER stated that I received any form of scholarship from SG.
I have, indeed stated that I have coached multiple kids to receive scholarships from SG (2018,2019,2020,2021) - last 4 years in a row. We have always made this distinction VERY CLEAR in our promotional materials.
To those who think I was only a music scholar, from where did you garner this information? Was it from my piano videos? If so, I take it as a compliment. Let the fact remain that I was an academic scholar who really liked music, and still likes music and will always use music as a tool to encourage my students to practise more.
For those who are truly curious about my music career, I was accepted into Sydney Conservatorium for a Bachelor of Music Performance (but declined the offer to study law at Sydney University instead), and I have won multiple awards in Sydney Eisteddfod and other Eisteddfods even during my uni days (balancing full-time study, 20 hours of piano/week and work). I believe in piano as a vehicle for hard work. Seeing as everyone is a Google expert here, you can have a look yourself.
7. I see many people layering criticisms to the tune of ‘Hey Steven, why did you study law if you were only going to open a coaching centre?’ For me, teaching was always a passion. I started teaching very early in my life and very naturally, it prospered from that point. Parents were happy with my coaching and they kept recommending more people. I never imagined that my life would end up as it is today. Nor did I know what I really wanted to do at age 18. Nonetheless, I can say wholeheartedly now that I am eternally grateful to all parents who have placed their kids in the trust of Scholarly and I will continue to work tirelessly to improve our systems. For the parents who know, I wake up quite early every day just to work on Scholarly and I have devoted my life to these kids more than any tutor that I know of, in Sydney. Like I mentioned before, we are far from perfect. I know that and I am ok with it. We will only continue to persevere and improve.
8. To prospective parents who are reading this post, there is a layer of truth in every story. Many of the parents above are completely right in their opinions and it is definitely true for some kids.

1. I understand the strong emotions that some parents might feel towards my views on Selective vs Private Schools. Everyone is entitled to their own viewpoint. I simply state what I see to be true. James Ruse is a very good school and Private Schools are good too. The only difference is opportunity. Some kids will make use of those opportunities whilst others will waste them. I have always stated that the most important factor is the child and parent, not the school. A child can succeed at any school if they possess the right mindset and discipline, regardless of whether it is private, public, Selective etc. I apologise to parents who felt personally attacked through my words.
