Emergency health management

Health emergencies include disease outbreaks, natural disasters and mass casualty incidents. Find out what we’re doing to prevent, prepare for and respond to health emergencies.

。。。 。。。

Emergency health management in Australia

In Australia, state and territory health authorities manage health emergencies.

We get involved when health emergencies have a national or international impact.

When national health emergencies happen, it’s important to have a coordinated approach to:

• consistent and appropriate responses between states and territories
• manage the extra load on our health system
• reduce the effect on Australians

We need to be prepared for a range of health emergencies including:

• communicable disease outbreaks — such as an influenza pandemic, measles or bird flu
• the health effects of natural disasters — such as floods, bushfires and cyclones
• acts of terrorism — such as bombings, shootings or bioterrorism
• mass casualty incidents — such as plane and train crashes

Chemotherapy and the coronavirus threat — my immunity levels mean you need to care about COVID-19

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020 ... th-covid19/12056582

It has been a strange feeling hearing my possible death openly labelled inconsequential by public figures, commentators and even by some of my friends.

Some remark that coronavirus has "only a 1-4 per cent" fatality rate, while others implore that everyone relax because "most people will only get mild symptoms".

While these statements are broadly correct, there's a callous confidence that comes with knowing you're part of the 96 per cent who will survive an infection — instead of being among the potential "four-percenters" who might not.

People who have blood type A are more vulnerable to infection from the coronavirus, according to the report from the South China Morning Post. Conversely, people with blood type O have shown signs of being more resistant.

Australia blocks arrival of all non-citizens, non-residents in expanded coronavirus travel ban

All foreigner travellers will be banned from entering Australia from 9:00pm AEDT tomorrow.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the enhanced border measures in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

It applies to all non-citizens and non-residents.

Australians will still be able to return from overseas but they will be required to self-isolate for 14 days.

The Government had previously banned foreign nationals from coming to Australia from China, Iran, Italy and South Korea.

New Zealand had already announced plans to close its borders to foreign nationals from midnight tonight.

Bridget was one of Australia's first coronavirus cases. She reveals what happened next and how sick she really got

When Bridget Wilkins flew back to Australia from London earlier this month, she was looking forward to being MC at her best friend's wedding.

But she never made it to the ceremony.

After she landed, she went to the doctor for a general health check-up and discovered she had coronavirus.

"They said we think we should check you for coronavirus and I said, 'you're being ridiculous, I haven't got coronavirus'," she told 7.30.

"Turns out they were right and I was wrong."

No-one knows where she picked up the virus.

“ They think it may have been at the airport, whether it's Heathrow or Singapore … it's hard to pinpoint at this stage," she said.

She was one of the first cases of coronavirus diagnosed in Australia and has spent 13 days in isolation at a Brisbane hospital.

"It was quite scary when I got that phone call," she said.

"I'll be honest, the first question I asked the doctor on the phone was, am I going to die?"

"Which sounds a bit dramatic but at that stage, two weeks ago, I didn't really know what coronavirus was."

Hospital isolation

Ms Wilkins was taken to hospital to help prevent the spread of the virus.

"It felt like a bit of a con, to be honest, to walk into hospital feeling fairly healthy, yet everyone's in hazmat suits," she said.

The initial symptoms were not severe.

"I had things you'd have normally when you have a flu or a cold: sore throat, headache, bit of a chesty cough, but nothing too serious," she said.
"I had a little bit of a fever, I was a little bit tired.

"So, it was really hard to accept the diagnosis because I didn't feel physically unwell."

But then her condition deteriorated.

"I became very, very fatigued and I had quite intense headaches and a level of chest pain," she said.

The worst period was around days eight to 10.

"I felt like I was 80 years old," the 29-year-old said.

"I struggled to sit up in bed, to get out of bed, to do all the basic things that we probably all take for granted."

Recovery and beyond

Towards the end of her isolation, Ms Wilkins told doctors she was feeling a lot better and would be happy to remain in isolation at home to free up the bed for others.

But she was told she could not be released until she had returned two negative swabs in a row.

On day 13, she received that second negative and was free to go.

"Now I have no coronavirus in my system," Ms Wilkins said.

"I'm not infectious and I'm not contagious according to medical advice, which is nice.

"But what I do have is a low immune system."

Having been through the ordeal, she now admits to having a little fear about what happens next.

"It's a long time to be in one space, physically and mentally," she said.

"It's actually quite daunting because you don't really know where you're going to begin, what you're going to do.

"No-one talks about the end — not with coronavirus. They only talk about the beginning."

She hopes that sharing her experience with the illness will help inform others.

"I think all we can do is tell our stories and share facts, share knowns, share expectations," she said.

"So we can reduce the level of fear in the world and replace it with understanding, compassion and with love. And I hope I can do that."

两天前:
WHO warns against use of ibuprofen for coronavirus symptoms

The World Health Organisation is urging people who suspect they have caught the coronavirus to take paracetamol and not ibuprofen.

The World Health Organization recommended on Tuesday that people suffering COVID-19 symptoms avoid taking ibuprofen, after French officials warned that anti-inflammatory drugs could worsen the effects of the virus.

The warning by French Health Minister Olivier Veran followed a recent study in The Lancet medical journal that hypothesised that an enzyme boosted by anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen could facilitate and worsen COVID-19 infections.

Asked about the study, WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier told reporters in Geneva the UN health agency's experts were "looking into this to give further guidance."

今天惊人逆转:

The WHO says it has not seen any reports about negative effects from doctors who treat patients suffering from COVID-19 with the drug ibuprofen.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has withdrawn its warning that people who suspect they might have caught the coronavirus should not take the popular drug ibuprofen.

The UN agency clarified on Thursday that it is not aware of published scientific data on this topic.

The WHO added that it had not seen any reports about negative effects from doctors who treat patients suffering from COVID-19, the respiratory disease that is caused by the coronavirus.
