IT MAY seem like scientists merely blowing smoke, but it turns out tobacco plants could help kill cancer cells.
A molecule in the flower of the plant, which helps it fight off fungal and bacterial attacks, may be just as adept at helping humans kill cancer.
La Trobe University molecular scientists have discovered the defence molecule in the ornamental tobacco plant, which is from the same family as the plant that produces tobacco.
Lead investigator Dr Mark Hulett said lab tests showed that the molecule, called NaD1, has the ability to identify and kill off cancer cells in preference over normal healthy cells.
It works by gripping lipids in the cancer cell and ripping them open, causing the cells to spill their contents and explode.
Clinical trials could lead to the development of drugs containing the molecule that may help treat everything from cancer therapies and microbial infections to antibiotic treatment.
Dr Hulett said while this was a promising discovery, it would take up to a decade to progress.
The research was published in the journal eLife.
The trial was done in conjunction with a biotech company Hexima using equipment at the Melbourne-based Australian Synchrotron, which is facing a funding threat.
