Position Title:
Technical Specialist: WebSphere Application Server
Reports To: Middleware Team Leader
Supervises: No supervisory responsibilities
Position Summary:
To work in a small but dedicated team of technical specialists supporting the organisations middleware tier. Activities include designing, implementing and supporting middleware infrastructure to provide stable, secure and scalable environments.
The organisations middleware is based primarily on the IBM Websphere family of products including:
• Websphere Application Server
• Websphere MQ
• Websphere Message Broker
• Websphere Process Server
• Websphere Foundation Server
The focus of this position will be supporting the Application Server infrastructure. As part of this you will perform systems administration, software concurrency, on call support, information sharing and solution design.
Main Activities:
• Plan, build, customise and maintain WebSphere infrastructure in the distributed environment.
• Monitor the performance and capacity of the WebSphere environments to ensure 24x7 availability.
• Ensure that security policies are adhered to.
• Configure the WebSphere Application Server environment to integrate with other products used by the organization including; Tivoli, Omegamon and MQ.
• Perform second level problem determination and rectify WebSphere systems problems.
• Prepare documentation for use by Technical and Production Support staff.
• Provide technical support to users in the use and configuration of WebSphere infrastructure.
• Develop migration strategies for WebSphere applications and WebSphere upgrades to ensure consistency of deployment and to minimise impact of changes.
• Plan effective disaster recovery for the WebSphere environments.
Key Skills:
• Experience working with IBM’s WebSphere Application Server product
• Developed skills in Windows 2000 / 2003 operating system
• An understanding of J2EE applications and WebSphere MQ will be an advantage
• Strong analysis, design and problem solving skills
• Good interpersonal and consultative skills
• A strong customer service ethic
• Good project planning skills.

External Contacts: Product vendors
Typical Experience: At least 5 years of broad experience in IT with 2-3 years in a highly technical role.
Relevant tertiary qualification preferred but not essential.
