PARENTS are calling for an urgent review of the Department of Education's International Student Program, fearing it is operating at a loss.
The average annual cost of educating a high school student in NSW is $15,810. But fees for international students are $13,000 for Years 11 and 12, and $11,500 for Years 7 to 10.
Last year 3793 international students enrolled in state public and secondary schools, the majority in Years 11 and 12. That is an increase of more than 70 per cent in five years.
International students are enrolled in more than 260 state public schools, including 13 intensive English centres and the Intensive English High School.
Parents fear the program is a drain on public education funding.
Executive Member of the Northern Sydney Regional Council of P&C Associations, Steph Croft said: "Although the International Student Program provides benefits we have some concerns because current fees for International students are well below the average annual cost of educating a high school student in NSW, which is $15,638 according to Productivity Commission calculations."
She fears the cost of educating international students is much higher as schools must provide extra programs to cater for them. "Costs associated with international students can be higher due to provision of intensive English classes, ESL teachers, support services and additional infrastructure like demountable buildings in schools necessitated when student numbers increased dramatically," she said.
