转一篇有关会计的文章,看了真是让人心寒啊。什么时候起连会计也外包了啊。

Visy, Transfield Services, Fairfax Media and Qantas are among those companies either outsourcing or automating finance and accounting work, or assessing the merits of doing so this year, as chief financial officers remain under pressure to slice costs wherever they can.

Outsourcing usually only makes economic sense in companies with large finance teams.

Visy is understood to be sending finance and accounting jobs to the Philippines via Indian outsourcer and adviser Infosys. The packaging company didn’t respond to requests for confirmation.

News Limited has already offshored about 40 finance roles and had plans to use Infosys to run other production processes on-site in Australia. But CFO understands the provider of the onsite “onshoring” is still under review.

As part of its efficiency drive, infrastructure company Transfield Services is “modelling” the costs and benefits of outsourcing some transactional roles. “We have told staff we are looking at whether or not we outsource some basic, repetitive finance processes,” a spokesman said. “But it is not a forgone conclusion that we will do so.”

In 2012, Fairfax Media appointed Andy Stiddard to the role of “finance initiative lead” to improve performance and cut the cost of the finance team as part of the “Fairfax of the Future” plans. This includes a target of $235 million in cost savings company-wide by June 2015.

Last year, Infosys completed reviews of Fairfax Media’s finance and accounting functions. Stiddard told the Shared Services and Outsourcing Network conference late last year that there were then no plans to outsource or offshore roles, but he said “transactional” roles should be outsourced or automated. “Judgment-based” work, such as is done by finance business analysts, should be in-house, close to the key decision makers, he said.

Numerous companies in Australia have outsourced transactional finance roles in the past year, with several others moving to tender stage this year. Some with larger finance teams have also moved to offshore work that is riskier to outsource due to regulatory requirements, including statutory reporting.

AUTOMATION ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE

A December survey of 40 finance bosses by CFO found 44 per cent were automating finance jobs in 2013. Commonwealth Bank and Dexus Property Group are among those that have focused more on technology rather than outsourcing.

Qantas is another company understood to be assessing whether to outsource or automate finance roles, along with other areas like procurement, as part of its overall cost cutting program.

“Like many other parts of the business, the Qantas Group’s finance department is working on a transformation program,” a spokesman said. “The purpose of the program is to investigate how we can make Qantas Group finance work more efficiently, improve internal processes and provide a better service to the rest of the company.”

It is understood the company already uses staff with offshore vendors to reconcile accounts with airlines with which it has codeshare agreements.

Rob Byrnes, Qantas’s head of finance operations and logistics, said recently just sending back office work offshore had “ephemeral” benefits. Using technology instead not only cut costs, it provided more detailed information on performance, he said, because companies still maintain control over the processes and further improvements can be made more easily.

“[Using automation] is a better way of processing and bringing productivity gains,” he said. “Then the second phase is the data that it gets allows you to then look at the second layer of [improving] productivity.”
