My husband was on a taxi home a couple of weeks ago, chit chatting with the driver, who's a chinese, when the driver asked him which school i went to. I think my husband told him earlier that he was from the uk but i went to high school (year 11 and 12) and uni here 20 years ago. The driver proudly announced that his kids go to JR and NSGH, and then asked for the name of the school i went to.
When he learned about the name of my school (a lower north shore private girls school), he commented that 'don't they have just 2, 3 students achieving over 99 in hsc each year? In JR, half of their students achieve above 99.' My husband thought the driver would just leave it like that and didn't respond further. 想不到the driver then asked my LG, so what marks did your wife get for hsc? My husband just couldn't believe his years. This was 20 years ago!
Luckily, i did do quite well in HSC and i just so happened had 'boasted' my hsc results to my husband just a few days before so he remembered what marks i got. This was also during the days when very few students go to coaching schools. The driver then said 'oh' and didn't say anything more about this topic for the rest of the journey.
Do you think chinese parents here are too obssessed about schools and hsc (or whatever it's called i other states)? I don't think my daughter will ever be able to compete with these chinese kids! 中國爸爸媽媽實在太緊張啦! |
